Bonnie Harrison, RN, CHTP, from Hackettstown, NJ describes how she used HT to assist her mother-in-law, Ruth, during a hospital stay.  From Ruth's arrival at the emergency room until her discharge four days later, Bonnie used HT to relieve the pain of a broken hip that required surgery.  Notice how Bonnie turned the time normally spent waiting for tests and their results into opportunities to use HT to ease pain and reduce anxiety.  We can all do that for family and friends.  Below is her story that has a nice surprise ending.

One Wednesday afternoon, I received a call that my mother-in-law, Ruth (age 93), had fallen and was being transported to Hackettstown Hospital.  She arrived at the ER with considerable pain in her left hip and elbow.  She had an abrasion and bruise on her elbow and was unable to raise or fully extend her arm.  As Ruth waited for x-rays, I did Healing Touch on her elbow.  I worked for about ten minutes alternating Hands in Motion and Hands Still when she told me that the pain was gone and demonstrated a full range of motion with her arm.  I also noticed a significant decrease in discoloration in the area.

As we continued to wait, I did Energetic Ultrasound around her left hip.  The x-ray was negative for the elbow but inconclusive for the hip so we waited again for a CAT scan.  I used the wait time to do Chakra Connection and Hands in Motion clearing from head to toe. Unfortunately, the scan showed a broken leg, and she was scheduled for surgery the next morning.  It was not until she arrived at her hospital room and was moved around a bit, that she took some pain medication---the first of the day!  Before she went to sleep, I did a Spiral Meditation followed by Pain Drain and Magnetic Passes to clear the area around the left hip.  She then slept pain-free through the night.

Ruth's surgery went well and two screws were placed in the bone.  I continued doing HT with Ruth twice a day for the remainder of her stay.  Only once did she request pain medication telling her physical therapist, "I am getting Healing Touch and don't need it".  Her orthopedic surgeon was impressed with how Ruth's incision was healing.  Normally there is much more bruising after this type of surgery.  He was also pleased with the incredibly small amount of pain medication she had requested.

But perhaps the most amazing part of this story is the effect that HT had on Ruth's dementia.  Ruth's memory is poor and it is not unusual for her to ask, "What day is it?" about every two hours.  At the conclusion of a session on the third day, Ruth opened her eyes and said, "When are you leaving to see Matthew?"  For her to recall that I was about to pick up my son, Matthew, from college was just short of miraculous.  When I told her how impressed I was that she remembered, she answered, "Well it is Saturday."  My husband and his sister were speechless.  Ruth has not remembered an accurate day in months!

In the last newsletter, I wrote about the importance of clearing the energy field.  In this article, Judy Stoddard, RN, CHTP, from Wilmington DE shares the incredible things that can happen when using the simplest of techniques. Here is what Judy wrote:

I, too, have found that clearing the energy field makes a big difference, and I use clearing techniques at every session.  It actually feels wonderful to ME when I clear someone's field ~ it's hard to explain, but it's as if I'm playing in the energy.  It feels soft and peaceful, and I notice that I use different strokes, sometimes broad and slow, other times short and quick.  Sometimes I feel as if I'm untangling and straightening golden strands of light.

I have worked regularly for two years with a client who has Wegners Disease, a rare auto-immune condition.  Healing Touch has helped stabilize her symptoms and control the progress of the disease.  Her physician said that she is the best controlled case of Wegners he has ever seen. She no longer needs to take cortisone or blood pressure lowering medication.

I tend to use mostly upper level techniques in my work, the ones I learned in HT Level 3 & 4 classes.  However, one day before she arrived, as I was meditating, it
came to me that I should use three techniques from HT Level One, specifically,  Hands in Motion, Chakra Connection and Mind Clearing. I thought about it two different times and since these techniques kept coming to mind, I decided to do them.   During the session, she went into an incredibly deep relaxation, so deep that I did Mind Clearing above her head without touching her so as not to disturb her.  You could have cut the energy in the room with a knife.  The only word I can use for the session is "powerhouse" which really surprised me.  I think it is good for students to keep in mind that the Level 1 techniques DO work well and can often be the best choice.  Simply remain open to what the client needs in that moment.

Congratulations to Alexandra Gotea

Best wishes to our newest CHTP, Alexandra Gotea from Sunnyside Queens, NY.  Alexandra is a nurse at NYU Medial Center in New York City.  She attended HTNJ classes and mentored with Maggi for certification.  She received the good news on November 22, 2010 and said it was the perfect holiday gift.
An Athletic FamilyHorizontal Fall leaves falling

Is there  an athlete in your family?  Read how Sally Schenkman, RN, from Randolph, NJ uses Healing Touch to help her athletic children  prepare for competitive events and then speed their  recovery the following day.  Sally wrote:

Since taking Healing Touch Level
One, I have so enjoyed embracing my new awareness of the energy that surrounds us and using a focused intention to help another person.  Though my family was a bit skeptical, they allowed me to practice with them. So amidst their quizzical expressions and good humored teasing I began.

Since my family is an athletic one, I use HT to relieve stress before baseball games and swim meets.  I also use Hands Still and Energetic Ultrasound & Laser on specific aches & pains after daily workouts.  For my daughter's sinus headaches or for my husband after a stressful day at the office, I usually do Hands in Motion clearing, Chakra Connection and finish with Mind Clearing.  At first my hand movements were amusing to them, but as the intention to bring a loving, healing presence came through, they often fell into a deep restful sleep, later awakening to ask, "What did you do?  That felt so good!"  Now instead of my asking them if I can practice, they come to me and request HT.

The Advanced Mentor Group is Growing

There are now 24 apprentices in our HTNJ community who have completed Level 4 and are actively working towards certification with a mentor.

Student Questions

Q. What is the difference between Healing Touch and Reiki?

A. Healing Touch and Reiki are both energy modalities that assist the body's natural ability to heal.  However there are significant differences between the two.
Ten years ago, I received Reiki training through the master level before studying Healing Touch. What attracted me to Healing Touch was the wide variety of techniques, the standardized program and the opportunity to become a certified practitioner.  Many Reiki students continue their education by learning Healing Touch which enhances what they already know.

Reiki was developed in Japan in the 1800's by Dr. Mikao Usui and brought to the United States in the mid-1900's by Mrs. Hawayo Takata.  Reiki is a Japanese word that translates as "God Light Energy".  Rei describes the universal and limitless aspect of this energy and Ki represents the life force, present in all living things.

When a student attends a Reiki class, they participate in an ancient ceremony known as an "attunement" to activate the flow of Reiki energy.  Only a Reiki master may teach and perform this ceremony.  Students also learn a simple set of hand positions to use while doing Reiki.  At the second level, symbols are introduced to enhance the energy as well as distance healing.  Requirements for becoming a Reiki Master vary depending on the teacher.  However, there is no formal program of study or certification.

Healing Touch (HT) is a respected nursing and massage therapy continuing education program developed in 1989 by Janet Mentgen, RN.  Continuing education credits are approved for nurses through the American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) and for massage therapists through the NCBTMB.

HT classes are open to the general public and anyone can learn and practice Healing Touch. The program has five levels of classes where students learn a total of 32 Healing Touch techniques using light or near-body touch.  Some techniques clear and balance the entire energy field, while others focus on pain relief in a specific area.  Examples of techniques learned in Healing Touch classes are Chakra Connection, Magnetic Clearing, Chelation, Pain Drain and Mind Clearing. However, HT is more than a group of techniques and is practiced as an art. Students learn to work holistically, selecting and sequencing techniques to meet the individual needs of the recipient.

HT is a standardized program leading to certification as a Healing Touch Practitioner and the designation "CHTP" which is widely recognized in energy medicine therapy.  Healing Touch International (HTI) administers the five-level HTI Healing Touch Certificate Program and all practitioners abide by a Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
