Dear  ,

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, this is a busy month for many. For us it has been extra busy! It was a big step of faith to venture out on my own. My heart was sad to leave Ballentine Pediatrics, but as I walk this road of faith I trust God will direct my path as He leads me and instructs me in the way I should go.

On November 2nd I had the tremendous privilege of addressing a forum of specialists at the Governor's Mansion. This was one of the highlights of my month.

I am now in my own office in the downtown area of Columbia. I want to thank Dr. Geurkink for inviting me to work with her. It was a tremendous privilege to learn from her. And I want to thank the staff at Ballentine Pediatrics for their love and support during my time there.

And now, on to this month's newsletter! I thought I would do something for the men in our lives, so in this issue we will focus on Prostate Health. Prostate cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in men. If it is caught early, it can be treated and this allows the person to have a good quality of life.

The most common prostate problem is prostatitis or benign prostatic hyperplasia, in which the prostate gland enlarges, interfering with the flow of urine. This is thought to be due to hormonal imbalances, possibly testosterone deficiency and oestrogen dominance, affecting prostaglandins, which have an anti-inflammatory effect. - Patrick Holford, New Optimum Food Bible

Prostate Cancer - Causes and Risk Factors

The causes of prostate cancer aren't yet understood. Cases are rare in men who are under the age of 50. However, there are certain things that place some men at higher risk of developing the disease than others:

  • Being overweight or obese
  • Having a father or brother with prostate cancer
  • Being of African-Caribbean or African-American descent and in western countries
  • There is some suggestion that a fat-rich diet may contribute to prostate cancer, but this is not proven
  • Studies linking the cancer to vasectomy, an operation to remove a man's fertility, are contradictory.

Worrisome Symptoms

  • Urinating frequently Difficult or painful urination or ejaculation
  • Delay or hesitancy before urinating
  • A feeling that the bladder has not completely emptied
  • Blood in urine or semen
  • Disturbed sleep because of the need to urinate
  •

Foods that Benefit the Prostate

  • Raw foods and foods that are high in zinc. Pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, spinach
  • Walnuts, raspberries and watermelon
  • Wild Alaskan salmon
  • Cold pressed olive oil and walnut oil
  • Fiber from fruit and vegetables, especially broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts
  • Grains - brown rice, quinoa, oats, millet and rice bran
  • Beans - kidney bean, lentils and soy beans
  • The carotene lycopene found in tomatoes. Men will benefit greatly from eating 10 or more cooked tomatoes (in a little cold-pressed olive oil) on a weekly basis. The lycopene in tomatoes are released when heated in a small amount of the cold-pressed oil. Cut up a few tomatoes, brush with olive oil, and add some chopped garlic and fresh basil. Broil or grill a few minutes and serve. Raw is also beneficial.
  • Soybeans - the phytoestrogens genistein and daidzein in soybeans inhibit 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone.
  • Make sure your vitamina D levels are optimized with appropriate sun exposure.
  • Pomegranate Juice:  Click on links below to see studies.
