Granola Coming Soon!

Dear  ,

We are taking the next steps with regards
to the granola. We are finalizing labels and have found an FDA approved kitchen in downtown Columbia, SC and should start manufacturing by mid-April.  All that to
say that this is a major step of faith for me as I step out into something totally new.  Keep an eye out for Alive Again Wheat Free Granola coming soon!

This month is HEART Month. Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in America. It has been that way for 90 years. Almost one million Americans die of heart disease each year. One of the saddest things is that many of these deaths can be prevented through diet and exercise. It's about going back to the basics, slowing down the pace of our hectic lives and focusing on what is important in life! Most of the younger people that die with heart disease are male. But interestingly enough once women go through menopause, their risk of dying from heart disease increases threefold. Women who are apple-shaped (carry their weigh around their waists and tummy) are at greater risk as this is the "dangerous fat".

There is a genetic predisposition of developing this disease, yet there are many people who simply repeat the aweful dietary habits of their parents and grandparents. People with heart disease have:

- High LDL cholesterol level. High cholesterol and hardening of arteries go hand in hand. Cholesterol is only one piece of the puzzle.

- High levels of homocysteine (a toxic amino acid formed as a by-product of the metabolism of proteins). Levels are higher in people who have a genetic predisposition and those who eat a lot of animal protein, including eggs.

Also, those people who have high blood pressure, diabetes and those who are overweight are much more susceptible to heart disease. Try to maintain your ideal body weight. Work out your BMI here : http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/

WHAT'S BEST FOR THE HEART?

*Essential fatty acids (the good fats : flax seeds, avocado pears, nuts (almonds, walnuts, brazil nuts - lower cholesterol)  and seeds, olives, olive oil and fatty fish (tuna, mackerel, herrings, sardines, wild salmon and wild trout)

*Fruit and vegetables containing carotenes: carrots, broccoli asparagus, spinach, mangoes, butternut squash. Apples and bananas which are high in pectin, a water soluble fiber that helps to lower cholesterol levels and blood pressure.

*Artichokes lower cholesterol - contains cynarin, which has been formulated into a drug for lowering cholesterol and is also a natural diuretic (helps with water retention) and a natural anti inflammatory.

*Beans help reduce bad LDL cholesterol and lower blood pressure. They contain a glucose called alpha-galactose, which can cause gas but within a few days of eating regularly you will produce the enzymes needed to digest this and the gas will stop.

*Lecithin granules, which emulsify the bad fats. Sprinkle a tablespoon over your salad, vegetables or your breakfast cereals.

*Water - drink more of it.

*Brown rice, quinoa, millet, barley, oats and spelt.

*Exercise. The heart is a muscle that needs exercise.
30 - 40 minutes a day. Tennis, walking, swimming, running are all good.
NOT RECOMMENDED FOR A HEALTHLY HEART

*Saturated fats which include cheeses and butter, cream cheese, hard margerines and red meat.

*Fried foods, hydrogenated or  transfats.
