Finding Your Place: Becoming a Member of the Wider Community

*Morgan Jones, Queens Director of the Mayor's Community Affairs Unit:  "修身,齐家,治国,平天下:How Chinese Language and Culture Changed a New Yorker and Can Build NYC's Communities."
*Professor Xueming Bao: TaiQi demonstration and discuss how to incorporate elements of the practice into our teaching of Chinese.
*Ammy Chao, Chinese teacher at Millennium High School, will discuss her efforts to raise funds to allow her to purchase Chinese supplies, organize trips, and more.
*More Cultural Jeopardy! (time permitting)     

 

Successful Chinese Programs: The Herricks School District Example

May 6 (Friday), 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.  Register here.  

 

*Dr. Lori Langer de Ramirez, Chairperson of the Herricks School District World Language Department, will share with us her approach (at the school district and school level) to creating and sustaining a successful Chinese language program.

*Lillian (Yun) Zhang, high school Chinese teacher, will discuss her experiences on joining the Herricks program, her challenges and successes, and several projects she has successfully implemented in her classes.
*Elizabeth Yu Ellsworth, middle school Chinese teacher, will join us "virtually" to share her creative ideas for teaching Chinese.  

 

DCLT Friday Night Forums will be held in NYU's  Kimball Hall Lounge, 246 Greene Street (Waverly Place).   Professional development credits are available for both events through the NYS ALBETAC.  Dinner will be provided.


"The History & Development of Chinese Dance"

Shi Jingxin,  

Choreographer, Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony

April 3 (Sunday), 2-4 p.m.  The Renwen Society at China Institute presents a lecture by Ms. Jingxin Shi on Sunday, April 3, 2-4 pm on the history and development of the Chinese dance. Ms. Shi is a choreographer and lecturer on dance at the Beijing Dance Academy in China.  She is the artistic director of XIN-ACT-LAB, an independent dance-theater company founded in early 2009.  She was also commissioned to choreograph for the Opening Ceremony of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.  Ms. Shi is currently a visiting scholar at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. During the lecture, Ms. Shi will discuss and show videos of the dance section of the Opening Ceremony of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. She will also demonstrate for the audience dance moves.
