 Greetings!

Happy Happy Holidays!  Our redesigned e-newsletter is going to over 10,000 senior athletes in California carrying seasons greetings and best wishes for the New Year.

I hope you are all planning on participating in the 2011 California Senior Games Championships from March 26 to April 3 at Stanford University and other venues in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our sports commissioners are busy planning the 24 sporting events and making certain that the venues offer the best possible competitive conditions for athletes.

2011 will be a big year for California Senior Games and senior athletes as we add new regional Games to our calendar (see Calendar). We applaud and commend your commitment to exercise -- the key to long, healthy living!

We are proud of our new websites, www.californiaseniorgames.org and our updated www.bayareaseniorgames.org, and expect to expand both this year as we continue our commitment to greener games and less paper.

We are recruiting new board members for the California Senior Games Association and have just added two athlete representatives who will be confirmed at our annual meeting in March.

We are actively working on sponsors and foundations to help support Senior Games in California. If you have a contact, idea or referral regarding a potential sponsor, please email your suggestions to acribbs@bayareaseniorgames.org

Happy New Year,

Our Newest Sport: Rugby!
rugby
We are delighted to announce that we have added an Rugby Eight Team  Tournament on March 26 at Steuber Rugby Stadium at Stanford. The over 50 Rugby players contacted our office and asked if they could be in the Senior Games. So after checking the insurance requirements and getting a confirmation, Frank Merrill (USA Rugby board member) agreed to be the sports commissioner and we already have 6 teams signed up to play. The tournament will be followed that evening by a rousing rugby barbeque and fellowship and fun for all.
Rick Milam Memorial Classic

Rick Milam, former Senior Games Track & Field Commissioner

In a tribute to Rick Milam, who died last August, the 2011 Senior Games Track and Field Championships will be named the Rick Milam Memorial Track & Field Classic.  Rick was the renowned and beloved Track & Field Commissioner for the past four Bay Area Senior Games and the 2009 Summer National Senior Games. Rick's presence, enthusiasm and love for athletes will carry forward. Jeff Meyer, a long-time friend of Rick's and an experienced meet director in his own right, has been appointed to direct the meet in Rick's honor.

March 26: Health & Peak Performance Conference

Inspired by the popular Peak Performance Lectures  at the 2009 Summer National Senior Games and our national conversation about health, aging and care, the Second Annual Health & Peak Performance Conference will take place on Saturday, March 26, at Stanford.

Keynoting the event will be Laura Carstensen, PhD Stanford Professor and Director of Stanford's Center on Longevity. The day will also feature lectures on fitness, performance and nutrition, a luncheon and panel discussion with U.S. Olympians, and a Celebration of Athletes reception for athletes, sponsors and organizers. The Health and Peak Performance Lectures are a Community Program from the California Senior Games Association.  Registration is open to all. Stay tuned for details.
