From The Principal's Desk

Dear Parents and Friends,

As Term 2 draws to a close it is worthwhile reflecting on our journey over the past six months. Once again the school community (students, staff, parents and friends) were engaged in a wide variety of educational activities. We are very fortunate at Nedlands Primary School to have a creative and hard working school community which is committed to the education of the children in our care.

Listed below is a selection of some of activities which took place at Nedlands Primary School this term:

Semester 1 Reports

Every Year 1 - 7 student will take home their Semester 1 reports on Wednesday July 4, 2012. Reports should remain sealed in the envelope until they arrive home. The issues of safe keeping and confidentiality are important. You will find a page of 'Explanatory Notes' on the inside of the report cover page which gives an illustration on how to interpret the report. Thank you to all staff who worked hard on producing fair and comprehensive reports for your children.

The information reported to you on your child's progress is very comprehensive i.e. Years 1, 2, 4 & 6 receive a Term 1, Semester 1 and Semester 2 report. While the Years 3, 5 & 7 receive a Term 1 report, Semester 1 report ,a Semester 2 report, NAPLAN reports in September and WAMSE (W.A. based) Science and Society and Environment reports (Dec). This amount of reporting is comprehensive and provides families with a wealth of information. Please use this information to support your child and to discuss achievements and areas for improvement.

Lightning Carnival

Last Thursday 21 June Nedlands Primary School participated in the annual Div A CRSSG Lightning Carnival held at College Park. Nedlands competed against Dalkeith, Swanbourne, Rosalie and North Cottesloe Primary Schools. All games were played in fine spirit and all Nedlands participants did their best for the school.

Results are as follows;

Soccer A 3rd, Soccer B 1st,

Hockey A 3rd, Hockey B 5th,

Netball 2nd, Netball B 4th, Netball C 3rd and

Football 2nd.

I would like to congratulate all who participated.

Early Childhood Education Campaign

The State Government has introduced a range of reforms in early childhood education.

To inform Western Australian families of these changes and how their children will benefit, a comprehensive communications strategy has been developed. It includes promotional materials and parent resources which highlight the importance of early learning, reminds parents that Pre-primary will become compulsory next year and encourages all parents to become more actively involved in their children's schooling in the early years. Below is a link to a new website for parents which I encourage you to visit:

http://www.det.wa.edu.au/schoolsandyou/detcms/portal/

Interschool Cross Country

Yesterday Nedlands, Rosalie, Hollywood, Swanbourne, Cottesloe and Dalkeith Primary Schools Cross Country teams competed in the annual Interschool Cross Country Carnival, hosted by Nedlands Primary School at Melvista Oval. Conditions were near perfect for running and all competing teams gave their best efforts for their school. I would like to congratulate Mr de Souza on an excellent job of organising this carnival, ably assisted by Mr Phoebe and Mr Ferguson. Scores are as follows:

6th Hollywood PS 49 points, 5th Rosalie PS 74 points, 4th Cottesloe PS 95 points, 3rd Nedlands PS 101 points, 2nd Swanbourne PS 134 points, 1st Dalkeith PS 139 points.

Congratulations to Dalkeith PS who have won this carnival for the last three years in a row.

Year 5 to 7 Violin Concert

Congratulations goes to the violinists in Year 5 to 7 who learn through the school's Instrumental Program.

Each student prepared individual items and ensemble items were performed by all the students in each Year level. The various solo and ensemble items provided a wonderful program which concluded with a dynamic ensemble performance that involved all the students.

Special thanks must go to Mrs Conroy who accompanied all the items. This was a highlight of the evening as many students never have an opportunity to perform with an outstanding accompanist until they reach their secondary level of education.

Thank you very much to the parents who provided an enthusiastic and supportive audience on the night.

The school is very fortunate to have Miss Tanya Ramakrishnan as our violin teacher and it was her idea to stage these annual concerts some 3 years ago. Her organization and the hours of tuition/rehearsal time that she puts into each student for these evenings ensures that the students are thoroughly prepared to perform at their best on the night. Thank you Miss Ramakrishnan.

We look forward to the Year 3/4 evening that will be held at the end of next term.

Well done to everyone.

2012 OPUS Concert - Perth Concert Hall

The young singers in our Junior Choir are extremely excited about the forthcoming OPUS performance less than a week away.

The OPUS Concert is staged by the Education Department every year and showcases the excellence in music in WA Government Primary & Secondary schools. Our Junior choir is the only Primary School item on the night.

The performance at this year's OPUS Concert is a result of the wonderful performance the Junior Choir gave at the Commonwealth Youth Rally held earlier in the year at Government House Ballroom.

The enthusiasm with which the children are approaching each rehearsal in preparation for this very special event will ensure a wonderful performance on the night.

Thank you to the parents who have booked nearly 300 tickets for the evening - amazing support for our Nedlands children.

All the very best to Mrs Conroy and the children - a night to remember for many years to come.

Just a Reminder

Due to this performance, the Junior Choir will not be performing in this year's Children Sing Festival that will be held in the same week. Only the Senior Choir will perform in the Children Sing.

Dance Evening for Years 4 to 7

Just a reminder that the Dance Evening will be held tomorrow night in the Altius Centre.

All students have received notes regarding the evening but the following are a few reminders:

Session Times

* 5.45pm   Year 4/5 drop-off.

* 6.45pm   Parents return for Demo & Dance.

* 7.15pm   Year 4/5 children leave with their parents.

* 7.30pm   Year 6/7 drop-off.

* 8.30pm   Parents return for Demo & Dance.

* 9.00pm   Year 6/7 children leave with their parents.

Dance Rehearsal Times

* Parents will not be allowed to be in the Altius Centre during the rehearsal sessions:

Years 4/5             5.45 to 6.45pm

Years 6/7             7.30 to 8.30pm

* The students will be rehearsing their dances for their Dance Demo [a surprise]

Supervision of Young Children

* For safety reasons due to the limited space on the dance floor, Parents are asked to ensure that their younger children sit with them. We do not want any younger students to 'get in the way' our the older children when they are concentrating on performing the dances they have prepared for the night.

2012 Children Sing Choral Festival

SENIOR CHOIR: Thursday 5th July - OCTAGON THEATRE - [University of WA]

We wish Mrs Conroy and the members of the Senior Choir all the best for their performance on Thursday 5th July in the Octagon Theatre for the annual Children Sing Festival.

The students have been rehearsing diligently with Mrs Conroy and we are sure they will give a wonderful performance on the day.

Thank you to the parents who have purchased tickets for this performance. It will be very motivating for the Neddies singers to know there will be Nedlands parents in the audience to support them and our school. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to perform and for parents to see them do so as part of this special annual choral event.

Some last minute tickets may be available - please contact Mrs Conroy.

Donated Musical Instruments

Sincere thanks goes to the Davis family for the recent donation to the school of a drum kit.

We have received several donations in the past few years of musical instruments from Nedlands families and people within the local community.

This has included several violins, 2 x clarinets, a flute and 2 x trumpets. All instruments have been put to good use and we now have one spare of each of the instruments in the Orchestra and Concert Band. These spare instruments are in constant use as they are borrowed by students when their own instrument goes in for repairs or servicing.

Any donations are very much appreciated and 'put to good use'.

Free Red Dress on Friday 6th July

Please wear something red on Friday 6th July for "Go Red for RedKite." Please bring along a gold coin donation as all the money raised on the day will be donated to RedKite. RedKite provides support to children, young people and families affected by cancer. www.redkite.org.au

Coles Sports Vouchers 2012

Nedlands is participating in Coles "Sports for Schools program" for 2012.

It was so successful last year collecting 40,333 vouchers.

The school therefore received a huge amount of sport's equipment for FREE!

So start collecting your Coles Sport's Vouchers and place in the large red box placed on the table near the lunch order tray for collection.

Get your family and friends to help out as well.

Chess Club

Term 3 is the last term that I will be taking new members for 2012 as our Chess club championship is held in term 4. First preference will be given to existing members so if you wish your child to join the chess club, please put your form in early so I am able to gauge numbers.

Chess will recommence in term 3, on the first Monday back at school.

Currently the club operates out of room 16/17.

The club welcomes new members.
