From The Principal's Desk

Dear Parents and Friends,

I would like to thank the school community for the warm welcome I have received on returning to Nedlands Primary School. Can I extend a big welcome to all our new and existing families and wish you all a very successful 2012 school year. Once again we have had a considerable turnover of students between 2011 and 2012 however our overall school population is similar to 2011 with close to 550 K - Yr7 students being currently enrolled.

I wish all staff, students and parents a successful and rewarding

2012 school year. Nedlands Primary School is an outstanding

Primary school that offers a wide range of educational

activities. Our "Brand" is "Experience the Opportunities" and we

encourage all students to be actively involved in participating in the

opportunities offered at Nedlands Primary School.

Huijia Students 2012

Our 15 visitors from Huijia Private School in Beijing arrived last Friday.

Welcome to: Louise, Kasey, Amy, Wendy, Ani, Cissy, Christy, Steven, Hank, King, Toddy, Mike, Mike, David and Andrew.

As well as their Huijia Teacher, Ms Rebecca Yao and their ESL Teacher from Perth, Miss Bree Rampal.

The Huijia students will attend our school for most of the term with their last day on Tuesday 3rd April. They have a special program to complete while they are here and will also integrate with students from Nedlands at various times throughout the week.

Sincere thanks goes to the nine Nedlands families who will Homestay students during their stay. Organisation for the tour to Beijing for our Year 7 students in September has already commenced. A large number of Year 7 students expressed their interest in being part of this tour and information will go home with all Year 7 students throughout this term.

We wish our visitors all the best for their stay at Nedlands and know they will be made very welcome by our students.

In-Term Swimming Lessons

It was a very smooth start to the lessons that commenced this week for the Year 1-4 students. We welcome back Rhonda McCullough as the Swimming Supervisor. She is very organised and has a wonderful nature with the students.

We are extremely fortunate to have our own pool for these lessons. The Instructors thoroughly enjoy teaching at this venue without the problems of conducting lessons in the larger public centres. For our students, it is very convenient and the time saved in bus travel is of enormous benefit to the normal ongoing school day.

The year 5-7 lessons have been scheduled for the last two weeks of this term at Cottesloe Beach.

Before School Swimming Training

Our sincere thanks goes to Annie Kitto for an early start to our, ever popular, Before School Swimming Training.

The Year 6/7 students commenced on Monday and the Year 4/5 swimmers on Tuesday. A note went home with ALL interested students last Friday with a request for parent helpers for swimming training and preparing the after training breakfast snacks that will commence next week.

This special event relies on parent support. Last year we had a wonderful response from parents which meant that most parents were only rostered on for two or three occasions. Please return your note ASAP so that a roster can be prepared and sent home by this Thursday, 9th Feb.

Swimming Dates for This Tem:

JUNIOR [Year 1-3] House Carnival:       Thursday 15th March

SENIOR [Years 4-7] House Carnival:      Friday 16th March

Interschool Carnival [Years 4-7]:           Wednesday 28th March

Instrumental Program

We are looking forward to another exciting year for instrumental music at Nedlands Primary School.

The ongoing students commenced their lessons this week and the new students met their Instrumental Teachers who passed on information to the children in preparation to receive their instrument next week for their first instrumental lesson.

The ongoing students will be looking forward to continuing their ensemble music making as part of the Orchestra, Year 6/7 Concert Band and Jazz Band. The Year 5 Concert Band will commence in Term 3 and the Year 5 string players will join the Orchestra in Term 4.

An information evening will be held in the next few weeks for parents of students commencing lessons - information to go home when date confirmed with the Instrumental Teachers.

Free Desks / Furniture

There is a collection of desks and bookcases that the school no longer requires. These items are located on the verandah outside the Art Room and are free to anyone who wishes to take as many as they want. The furniture will be removed early next week.

Waste Wise Wednesdays

The Year sixes have been running this successful program for the past three years, with the aim to reduce our waste by 20%.

The Year six students collect food scraps and paper products which are then added to our compost bin. If the students bring plastics, drink boxes, wrappers etc on Wednesday they will need to take these items back home.

On Wednesdays we are encouraging all students to refrain from ordering plastic type containers through the lunch order system, or bringing them to school.

Your co-operation is appreciated.
