From The Principal's Desk

Dear Parents and Friends,

Welcome back everyone from your July vacation and it was terrific to see all the students start their first day back at school with such enthusiasm. We also welcome many new families to Nedlands Primary School with 20 new students starting at our school for the very first time. It never ceases to amaze me where our students have originated from. We have an amazing number of students from many countries speaking a wide variety of languages. A big thank you to our front office staff; Fay Moreton, Yvonne Ioannou and Ruth Dennis for their tireless work in managing these enrolments so professionally and competently. I also wish to acknowledge our teaching staff who are also very positive and welcoming when a new student arrives on their door step.

We have a group of generous P & C members who run an information session for all new families, which is highly valued and appreciated by our new families. Recent results from our Parent Satisfaction Survey clearly demonstrate that families feel very welcome at Nedlands Primary and the school provides an inviting atmosphere for all family members.

Term 3 will be very busy with Athletics, the Oral History project, TOMS for Years 5 & 7's, PEAC assessments for Year 4's, Massed Choir Festival and ABODA for our strings orchestra and concert bands. Good luck everyone.

Parent Satisfaction Survey

The School Board held an open meeting/information evening in June for all community members. At this meeting those in attendance were provided with a brief summary of the results of the Parent Satisfaction Survey.

The School Board met on Monday night to examine in depth the results of this survey and they will publish a summary report of the Satisfaction Survey to be sent to the school community.

Thank you once again for the excellent response rate which was extremely high i.e. 60+%.

Planet Ark National Tree Planting Day

Last Friday the whole school was involved in a tree / shrub planting session in support of National Tree Planting Day. The students, staff and volunteers planted over 300 native shrubs, trees, grasses and ground covers on Elizabeth Street and Viewway outside of rooms 14, 15, 16 and 17. In addition to these areas we also spot planted areas around the school which were planted out in 2010.

We were supported by City Toyota Nedlands who donated $650.00 worth of plants and also provided staff to help with the planting. Thank you also to IGA Captain Stirling who donated six Balga trees and Bunnings who donated ground covers and also provided staff member to assist on the day.

This was a big project which went very smoothly because of the excellent hard working committee i.e. Ollie Berry and Marg Parker (coordinators), Dagmar Mathews, David Utting and our gardener Hugh Rowlands. A final thank you to a group of our Year 7's who worked hard during the morning completing the planting and tidying up. We will monitor what we have planted and watch the growth of our new plants with interest. As Planet Ark's motto says, "Life really is better with trees".

Our Deepest Sympathies

Alan Marshall passed away On July the 16, 2011 after sustaining a serious fall whilst in care at Brightwater Care in Inglewood. I wrote to the school community earlier in the school year informing you all of Mr Marshall's welfare and that he would no longer be "visiting" our school because of his advanced dementia. Mr Marshall was a very intelligent and gifted scientist who was well respected in our community. Mr Marshall lived with his wife Marie and their children (who all attended Nedlands Primary School). We pass on our thoughts and best wishes to Mrs Marie Marshall and her family.

Parking

Please remember that the road verge along Viewway (between the crossover and the start of the picket fence) is a KISS/WAVE, Kiss and collect zone. Please do not leave your vehicle to collect children after school. Can you please remind grandparents and visitors not to leave their vehicles or park in this zone. Your assistance is most grateful and provides a safer transportation arrangement around our school. Please take extra care when waiting on Elizabeth Street.

Coles and Woolworths Vouchers

Both programs are up and running for 2011 so collect as many vouchers as you can and place them in the Coles or Woolworths voucher boxes in the office.

The school will benefit via sports equipment (Coles) or school supplies (Woolworths).
