From The Principal's Desk

Dear Parents and Friends,

It is my pleasure to be able to inform the community that the renovation of the basketball/ netball court and the new cricket net have been completed. This has been a major P & C initiative and has been planned funded and completed over a three year period. Our major source of funding was courtesy of our very successful fete which raised the bulk of the funds in 2010.

Our school is extremely fortunate to be blessed with a dedicated and hard working P & C association who give generously for the benefit of our students. The P & C have funded: - the building of the Altius Centre (ie funded with the Australian Government), air conditioning of the classrooms, laptops and computers, school pool, maths equipment, reading resources, teacher aid time, extension programs, musical instruments, sound system and the heating/cooling of the Altius Centre.

The main source of funding for the P & C is the P & C voluntary contribution and pool levy. We receive in excess of 90% payment of these charges and we urge all families to make a contribution. To date we have received 84% payment of the P & C voluntary contribution which is ahead of our usual rate of payment in June of each year. Your contributions are vital for the finances of the P & C, please support them.

Parent Satisfaction Survey

Thank you everyone for the excellent response in completing the survey which was emailed to you. The rate of return was in excess of 50% which is extremely high for surveys and National School Surveys have commented that this is the highest rate of return they have experienced in relation to the parent satisfaction survey.

The School Board will have access to some of this information (unfortunately, not all) for the public meeting scheduled for Wednesday 29th June (6.30 - 7.30pm) to be held in the library prior to the next P & C meeting.

The remaining information (mainly the qualitative responses) will be released by the School Board at a later date.

Once again thank you for taking the time to respond to this survey courtesy of our School Board.

Semester 1 Reports

Semester 1 reports will go home with all Year 1 - 7 students on Thursday July 7, 2011 as per previous years. The grades assigned i.e. A,B,C,D or E are allocated as expected by the respective achievement in that year eg. If an 'A' is allocated to a child in June then this is extremely high achievement given that the child still has six months of education to be completed in this year. Therefore some children may have received an A in a particular subject area in their December report from the previous year but drop back to a B in their new group for Semester 1 (June).

The teacher's at Nedlands Primary School moderate their judgements as compared to the NAPLAN results from a 'Like Schools' comparison and our process of moderation is very consistent.

Quiz Night a Success

The Quiz Night was a really fun night of challenges, games and surprises and we congratulate the clever winners.  Thanks to the generosity of participants and donors the school raised $15 000 on the night.  We sincerely thank the following businesses for their support:

Year 5 - 7 Violin Recital

Thank you to Mrs Ramakrishnan and Mrs Conroy for volunteering their evening to run this important recital for those violin students learning through the School of Instrumental Music. We thoroughly enjoyed the students playing a very wide range of pieces. Well done.

Interschool Sport

Well done to all those Year 5 - 7's who competed in last week's interschool fixtures. Once again it was another 'tough day at the office' as Nedlands 1 played North Cottesloe while Nedlands 2 played Dalkeith.

Nedlands 1 vs North Cottesloe won in netball B and drew in soccer while we were very competitive in football but were well beaten in hockey and netball A.

Nedlands 2 vs Dalkeith

We were victorious in football and drew hockey but were well beaten in netball and soccer.

Children's Sing Festival

A reminder that the Junior Choir performs at the Octagon theatre, UWA on Thursday 30 June commencing at 9.00am. Unfortunately this concert occurs at the same time as the final Year 3 dance sport session taking place in the Altius centre. We had a lot of difficulties fitting in the whole series of lessons due to the shortened term. This is the only time Dorothy from Dorothy's Dance was able to conduct this final session. This arrangement was further complicated by the Senior Choir performing on Wednesday 29 June followed by their winter lightning carnival taking place on Thursday June 30.

Dorothy's Dance

Parents of Year 4 - 7's please be advised that a DANCE EVENING will be held on Thursday 23rd June in the Altius Centre. A note has gone home with each child last Friday 17th June.

Years 4/5

5.45pm             Year 4/5 drop-off

6.45pm             Parents return for demo of dance

7.15pm             Year 4/5 children leave with their parents

Year 6/7

7.30pm             Year 6/7 drop-off

8.30pm             Parents return for demo of dance

9.00pm             Year 6/7 children leave with their parents

Year 3 Parents please be advised that a DANCE MORNING will be held on Thursday 30th June in the Altius Centre between 9 - 10.30am in the Altius Centre. Parents of Year 3 classes are welcome to come along and watch with a chance to join in.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Dorothy Gaunt for all her hard work in teaching our children. They learn such a wide range of dances every Thursday this term and thank you Dorothy for the culmination of our Social Dance program and our annual Dance Evening.

Immunisation of MMR 1 and MMR 2
To enable our records to be kept up to date, please advise the office with documentation when your child has been immunised with MMR1 (12 months of age) or MMR2 (4 years of age).
This is very important because if we have a measles outbreak at our school and your child is not fully immunised then they will not be allowed to attend school during this outbreak.

Calling for TOM's Volunteers

Nedlands Primary School has been involved in Tournament of Minds (TOMS) for several years with successful teams participating in State Finals and also the Australian Pacific Finals.

The tournament experience gives students an opportunity to work creatively to solve challenging problems in collaboration with team mates. The team skills required are creativity, lateral thinking, initiative, time management and problem solving.

Each year the number of teams we enter varies depending on the number of parents who are prepared to look after a team. At the moment we are forming teams from years 5, 6 and 7. Each team consists of seven students from more than one year level. Each of these teams needs a facilitator. The role may be shared and over the past few years parents have commented that sharing the role is an excellent way to facilitate a team.

  • All Nedlands Primary teams meet on a Sunday (usually in the afternoon).
  • The facilitator provides a venue for the 7 team members to come together for two hours each weekend to come up with the solution to their selected problem.
  • This means that you will have 7 children in your home for two hours each weekend for 5 weeks.
  • All TOMS students must be available every Sunday for 5 weeks
  • We will help you to understand the role of facilitator by meeting with you to discuss how to carry out the role and showing you a DVD.

The number of teams that we enter is directly related to the number of facilitators that we have ......so we are calling for volunteers!

TOM's starts the first week of term 3 and culminates in the Tournament Day on Saturday 27th August.

If you are interested please see Bev Nicholls Room 14.

FROM THE LIBRARY

Now we have the library up and running we need everyone to search book shelves, under beds in cupboards for any library books. There are a lot of missing books which must have found a cosy place to hide.

I would like to thank those parents who helped get the library up and running in a very short space of time. I know the children have appreciated it very much.

Children Sing Festival Tickets

One of the highlights of the year for both our choirs is the Children Sing Festival. Once again, this annual festival will be held in the Octagon in the second last week of this term. Tickets for this event are now on sale through the office and are $5 each. We need the support of as many parents and friends as possible so that our young singers have a large contingent of Neddies supporters in the audience.

  • Senior Choir      Wed 29th June at 1.00 - 2.15 pm
  • Junior Choir      Thurs 30th June at 9.30 - 10.45 am

Advanced Notice of Festival

Nedlands Primary School is holding a festival on Tuesday 25th October (Week 2 Term 4, 2011). There will be a multi-cultural theme. We would like to know if there are any interested students or parents who have connections with international food, music, instruments or dancing.

We envisage a concert to open the festival and food stalls to follow. We hope everyone will wear their national dress on the day.

If you are interested or have a contact please contact (Staff) Margaret Parker, Jenny Smith, Bev Nicholls or administration on 93862278 or email nedlands.ps@det.wa.edu.au

Parking

Please remember that the road verge along Viewway (between the crossover and the start of the picket fence) is a KISS/WAVE, Kiss and collect zone. Please do not leave your vehicle to collect children after school. Can you please remind grandparents and visitors not to leave their vehicles or park in this zone. Your assistance is most grateful and provides a safer transportation arrangement around our school. Please take extra care when waiting on Elizabeth Street.

Chess Club

Term 3 is the last term that I will be taking new members for 2011 as our Chess club championship is held in term 4. First preference will be given to existing members so if you wish your child to join the chess club, please put your form in early so I am able to gauge numbers.

Chess will recommence in term 3, on the first Monday back at school.

Currently the club operates out of room 16/17.

The club welcomes new members.
