From The Principal's Desk

Dear Parents and Friends,

Thank you to all of those families who have completed our Parent Satisfaction Survey which has been emailed to you via a specific newsflash. As mentioned in the last newsletter we chose this tool from National School Surveys because of their extensive database comprising a wide range of schools across Australia. This way we can see how we are going compared to other schools. In addition to the questions with a rating scale there are also a number of open ended questions specific to Nedlands Primary School.

The survey will now close on Monday June 13 and National Surveys should have the majority of data available to the School Board for this term. The Nedlands Primary School, School Board is running a public forum prior to the P & C meeting (6.30 - 7.30pm) on Wednesday 29th June and at this session we hope to have some data available to share. Details specific to this public meeting appear later in the newsletter.

Please remember to check on the following link to complete your survey and only submit one survey per family.

Jacinta Dharmananda - School Board Member Profile

Jacinta DharmanandaJacinta Dharmananda has two girls at Nedlands PS, one in year four (Shivani) and one in year three (Nishka). She has been involved with the P&C and the school generally in various capacities since her first daughter was in kindergarten. This year is Jacinta's first year on the Nedlands PS Board.

Jacinta currently works part time teaching and researching at the Law School at UWA.  Prior to UWA, she practised as a resources and finance lawyer in law firms and as in-house counsel in resource companies, both here in Perth and overseas including Japan, Singapore and the United States.  She loves languages and speaks Japanese.

One of Jacinta's areas of interest in the school is good governance, especially now that Nedlands PS is an independent public school. She is particularly interested in encouraging transparency and clear communication.

Holly Birch  -   School Board Member Profile

Holly BirchI have three children at Nedlands Primary School in years five, three and kindergarten.  I hold a Bachelor of Arts from Birmingham University, and was a recent participant in The Catherine McAuley Award, a leadership course for women.  I have enjoyed a successful corporate career in the telecommunications sector and playing women's rugby and touch football at the highest levels.

Since immigrating to Australia from the UK in 1992, I have lived in Melbourne, Brunei and the Philippines, before settling in Perth in 2002.   Being part of the fabric of a school community has been an important part of establishing ourselves here.

You only have to step foot in Nedlands Primary School to feel the vibrant energy that is created by the coalition of engaged students, committed and professional staff and caring parents and I encourage everyone to enjoy that wonderful energy whilst our children move through their primary school years.

Andrew Malcolm  -  School Board Member Profile

Andrew MalcolmI arrived here at Nedlands primary in fourth term of 2004 as an acting Deputy Principal. I gained a substantive position here in 2005. I offer 30 years of experience as a Principal, Level 4 and 5, Deputy Principal, Specialist teacher in student behaviour and well-being, Level 3 teacher, ECE specialist, ICT specialist and class teacher from K-7. I have completed [and applied] relevant training in Instructional Leadership and Intelligences, Growth Coaching, curriculum innovations and current pedagogy.

Interschool Sport

Nedlands Primary School is competing as two schools for the winter interschool fixtures which certainly stretches our talent base but does provide more opportunities for Year 5 - 7 students. As mentioned previously priority access to interschool sport is allocated to all Year 7 students subject to their behaviour and work ethic at school. This is followed by selecting Year sixes and then Year fives. It is very important to understand that representing the school is a privilege and students need to earn this privilege.

Nedlands 1 competed against Swanbourne and won the hockey match but lost in the netball, soccer and football. Nedlands 2 competed against Rosalie at Rosalie and were successful in soccer and football but struggled in netball, hockey was very close. It is a credit to our school that we have agreed to field 10 teams instead of 5. Another example of "Experiencing the Opportunities".

You Can Do It Program

We use a specific program to embed student success, well being and positive relationships. The 'You Can Do It' program is widely used in 100's of Australian schools and has been in existence for about 25 years.

The main focus is on building emotional resilience (do not sweat the small stuff) and to weaken the impact of negative thinking.

The five keys to success of 'You Can Do It' are:

  • Confidence
  • Resilience
  • Persistence
  • Organisation
  • Getting along

The teachers teach specific lessons relating to the 5 keys to success and we also reinforce these keys through our 'Green Card' system.

Assemblies

Each class and their respective teachers put in a tremendous amount of time and energy into their assembly items. The school receives a lot of positive feedback from the community on our fortnightly assemblies. The teachers go through a fair bit of angst during the preparations as well as on the day. Friday's Year 6's twisted musical folktale was another example of an outstanding assembly. Thank you to the Year 7's for co-ordinating our assemblies and all the teachers and their students for the work they put into the assembly items.

Western Force Visit

During May we had a visit from Western Force.

Calling for TOM's Volunteers

Nedlands Primary School has been involved in Tournament of Minds (TOMS) for several years with successful teams participating in State Finals and also the Australian Pacific Finals.

The tournament experience gives students an opportunity to work creatively to solve challenging problems in collaboration with team mates. The team skills required are creativity, lateral thinking, initiative, time management and problem solving.

Each year the number of teams we enter varies depending on the number of parents who are prepared to look after a team. At the moment we are forming teams from years 5, 6 and 7. Each team consists of seven students from more than one year level. Each of these teams needs a facilitator. The role may be shared and over the past few years parents have commented that sharing the role is an excellent way to facilitate a team.

  • All Nedlands Primary teams meet on a Sunday (usually in the afternoon).
  • The facilitator provides a venue for the 7 team members to come together for two hours each weekend to come up with the solution to their selected problem.
  • This means that you will have 7 children in your home for two hours each weekend for 5 weeks.
  • All TOMS students must be available every Sunday for 5 weeks
  • We will help you to understand the role of facilitator by meeting with you to discuss how to carry out the role and showing you a DVD.

The number of teams that we enter is directly related to the number of facilitators that we have ......so we are calling for volunteers!

TOM's starts the first week of term 3 and culminates in the Tournament Day on Saturday 27th August.

If you are interested please see Bev Nicholls Room 14.

CRUNCH AND SIP

Pears

Pears are at their best in Autumn, and are perfect for Crunch&Sip®.Juicier
pears can be pre-cut and drizzled with lemon or orange juice to prevent browning.

Our recent Crunch&Sip® student survey showed that along with apples, pears are the most frequent fruit consumed by students. Although many WA students eat pears, only 1% of students listed it as their favourite fruit!

Pear varieties include Josephine, Williams, Bartlett, Packham and Beurre Bosc. Pears are a great source of dietary fibre and vitamin C, keeping the bowels, teeth and bones healthy.

Carrots

Carrots are one of the most widely eaten foods on the Planet and are liked by everyone - especially Bugs Bunny. They are grown for their taproots which form below the surface. Above ground are ferny leaves which grow from the top or crown of our root.
Carrots are available all year round and are one of the cheapest fruit or veg available for Crunch&Sip®.

Now is a great time to plant carrots in the school or home veg patch. Go to www.yates.com.au/kids-gardening for information on how to plant. After 12 weeks, your students could eat their own carrots for Crunch&Sip.

Children Sing Festival Tickets

One of the highlights of the year for both our choirs is the Children Sing Festival. Once again, this annual festival will be held in the Octagon in the second last week of this term. Tickets for this event are now on sale through the office and are $5 each. We need the support of as many parents and friends as possible so that our young singers have a large contingent of Neddies supporters in the audience.

  • Senior Choir      Wed 29th June at 1.00 - 2.15 pm
  • Junior Choir      Thurs 30th June at 9.30 - 10.45 am

Hey Hey

This takes place this Friday commencing at 8.45 in the Altius centre. After much deliberation we are restricting the entry into Hey Hey to Years 3 - 7's. We have many Year 1 & 2 groups/individuals trying out for Hey Hey and it is heartbreaking rejecting them during the audition process. We also 'battle' to keep the Hey Hey to 90 minutes or thereabouts. We may consider a very informal lunch time talent show opportunity for the 1 / 2s later in the year. Watch this space.

Mr Jones on Sick Leave

Mr Jones has taken the remainder of Term 2 on sick leave and is having major surgery on one of his knees. We wish Mr Jones all the best and it is hard to imagine Mr Jones staying put during his recovery. Mrs Prosser is currently recovering from knee surgery on both knees and is recovering very well. We expect Mrs Prosser to return to work in Term 3, 2011.

Balga Trees

Thank you to our gardener Hugh Rowlands and parent helpers Olli Berry, David Utting and Dagma Mather who have helped with the planting of the Balga Trees on Viewway and Elizabeth street. The funds for these spectacular trees was provided by IGA Nedlands (Captain Stirling ). The remainder of the plantings (shrubs, small trees and ground covers) will take place on the Friday before National Tree Planting Day. (Friday July 29).

Parking

Please remember that the road verge along Viewway (between the crossover and the start of the picket fence) is a KISS/WAVE, Kiss and collect zone. Please do not leave your vehicle to collect children after school. Can you please remind grandparents and visitors not to leave their vehicles or park in this zone. Your assistance is most grateful and provides a safer transportation arrangement around our school. Please take extra care when waiting on Elizabeth Street.

The FOSTER CARERS' ASSOCIATION is urgently in need of clothes for children aged between birth and 12 years.

They do an important and very necessary job by taking children and babies in at short notice and looking after them until more permanent homes can be found.  These children are quite often distressed on arrival, so in many cases the foster carers have to be able to cope with very difficult situations.

Often these children arrive with few clothes, if any, and therefore it would be much appreciated if parents could donate any CLEAN clothes in GOOD CONDITION which they no longer need.

In addition, there is always a need for baby equipment such as prams, cots, pushchairs, etc. - again in good condition please.

I would be happy to collect, or they can be left on my front porch at 53 Claremont Crescent, Swanbourne.

Thank you very much.
