NLPCT Logo

Greetings!

I had to replace the banner at the top of this email. We don't have any snow, and there is frequently water trickling over rock in the parks or at the beaches. It's an unusual winter in Toronto.

There is movement everywhere. At NLP Canada Training, we are busy planning for two winter practitioner certifications, a spring retreat for NLP Practitioners (mark your calendar for Friday May 4 and watch for updates soon), and the 2012 HOPE Symposium (mark your calendar for September 29).

Are you excited yet?  I am writing, phoning, meeting, coaching and training and I am pumped. In January, Andrew Freund and Ron Vereggen put on terrific one day courses. They both have more planned: we are working on scheduling now. John Dafos was here last week to lead an evening with me, and he's looking forward to offering another one day course this spring. And there's more coming from more great leaders.

We have a community of terrific people who are doing more and more to support each other's achievement and push (just a little) so that we all have more success. If you haven't made it to an event yet this winter, take a cue from the ice melting in the parks. It's time to get moving!

Come share the energy, the ideas, the drive for success and the fun.

A Rare Opportunity for Training in Therapeutic Metaphor
Tom Condon is coming to Toronto, and NLP Canada Training has arranged a special price when 8 or more of us register together for his workshop on March 24 and 25.

Tom Condon is a well-known teacher of the Enneagram, NLP and Ericksonian Hypnosis who worked for many years with Carol Erickson (Milton's daughter). I've listened to his CD set on therapeutic metaphor and taken a course with him on the meta-model and the Enneagram.  When I heard that he would be in Toronto this March, I rearranged our training schedule so that I could attend. I also contacted Enneagram North and arranged for a group from NLP Canada Training to register at member pricing (a $50 saving) if we gather a group of 8 or more people.

Most importantly, I think this is a really good opportunity for us to learn together. It is because I have wide, deep roots in storytelling that I am so excited to work with another master storyteller and to have new teaching available to practitioners, masters and trainers from NLP Canada Training.

Click the link above for the details on the training and then call or email Linda to arrange registration.

Listen the Way People with Power Listen

All powerful people know that achieving, using and maintaining power requires excellent listening. Leaders in all fields follow the pattern set by military leaders. They gather intelligence that will allow them to predict behaviours and conditions. They use intelligence to strengthen their defenses and take advantage of opportunities. Gathering intelligence includes being an effective listener.

You are probably neither a spy nor a military leader. But perhaps you are involved in a number of situations where listening better would give you some kind of power. It might be the power to make a choice or to influence someone else's choice; it might be the power of increased authority or status at work; it might be the power to close a deal. Power is a measure of our ability to make choices that work for us. It depends on having and understanding "intelligence" about our situations and relationships.
Most of the advice on listening better seems to have been generated by the misperception that listening is something we do to cater to people with more power than we have. Here are two simple (but not easy) tips for listening the way people with power listen.

The first is that you must actively pay attention to the person who is speaking. This is more important even than paying attention to the content of what is being said. When you pay attention to the person who is speaking, you will begin to make a thousand unconscious adjustments that give you access not just to the content of the conversation but to the emotions and strategies of the person speaking. Think of a strong memory you have of an interaction with someone in power. You probably remember that feeling (comforting or terrifying depending on the circumstances) of having that person's complete attention aimed at you.

The second is that your attention will influence the information you are given. Once you have offered real attention to someone, they will notice and they are likely to respond when the quality of your attention changes. Sometimes you will pay more focused attention to get more information, and sometimes you will release your attention to give someone space to collect their thoughts. . . or to be comfortable enough to share something they might otherwise have kept to themselves. Powerful people know what information will be useful and they assume that they can get at this information by listening purposefully. They know that the way they are listening influences the kind of information they receive.

There are many ways to improve your listening, but the best are these. If you accept that achieving power means being able to influence people by your strength of will, then it is not a big jump to notice that the way you listen changes what people will tell you.  You have already set yourself up to listen the way powerful people listen.
