Greetings!
The banner at the top of this newsletter is extraordinary. It is a representation of one of those good things that you could not expect or plan. Sometimes life is just way better than you thought it would be.
HOPE 2011 brought many gifts. The speakers were wonderful and the audience was full of insight and support and laughter. While we have grown enough as a community that there were people who had to miss this HOPE (and we missed them), we have also grown enough so that we have a kind of confidence when we gather. We know what to expect.
Except that this year, the day at HOPE ended with a gift I did not expect, the gift of the painting that is hanging in our office and reproduced in the banner at the top of this page. I knew that Kate S. (one of our most recent Master Practitioners) was working on some new paintings. I didn't expect that she was working on a gift that would so wonderfully capture the feeling of the summer intensive courses.
How do you say thank you to someone who has found something you hold in your heart and turned it into something you can see with both your eyes and your heart?
Thank you, Kate. And thank you to everyone who looks at this painting and knows what it means to anchor our best thoughts in old trees and new friends.
Linda

A New Practice Comes to NLP Canada Training
In November, Kathleen Milligan will be seeing clients in the NLP Canada Training office at 47 Queen's Park Cres. E. This is a wonderful opportunity for two groups of people: the ones who would really benefit from a therapeutic session with Kathleen and the ones who are really curious about the unique mix of NLP, hypnosis and EFT that she uses. Kathleen is a member of the NLP Canada Training leadership team and frequently assists at NLP trainings.
If you are interested in booking a session in Toronto with Kathleen, she will be at NLP Canada Training on Wednesday November 2 and Wednesday November 16, from 11am to 8pm. You can make appointments by emailing Kathleen or calling Action Hypnosis at 905-685-7352.

What's the The Value of Practice? NLP (neurolinguistic programming) is well known for almost miraculously fast interventions. NLP techniques allow people to make what can be dramatic change in a very short time. What we sometimes forget is that the people who do NLP are called "practitioners" and the root of that word is practice.
It's true that we can make change quickly - we do it all the time. What's often more difficult than making a change is sustaining it. That takes practice. When NLP works to make sustainable change (and it often does), people notice the brief intervention. What they should notice is the way that intervention sets up a pattern that allows for conscious and unconscious practice of the change. It may feel like the change was made in five minutes, but useful change begins with an impact and continues through repetition.
This year, we are inviting practitioners to apply what we know about change and learning to their own skills in NLP and Ericksonian hypnosis. We are designing a series of evening events and a one day retreat designed specifically to allow practitioners to pay attention to specific components of NLP so that they can experience shifts, make adjustments to their own practice, and set up the patterns that allow moments of insight to become genuine competency.
For just $150 you can come to a full day retreat on November 5 (at Kelso Conservation area in Milton), and to all the new "Practice for Practitioner" sessions on Thursday evenings. You can also purchase those sessions separately ($100 without the Kelso retreat or $30 per evening). This small charge allows NLP Canada Training to continue to provide superb support and community to graduates long after they have completed their training.
Practice may not make perfect but we would sure like to test the model. Please come play! Call Carole to register (416-928-2394).

Find calm in the chaos: Learn to Focus on What You Value
If somebody tells you that you need better focus, you are likely to have one of two reactions. Neither of them will lead to better focus.
The first reaction we commonly have to the "suggestion" that we need to be more focused or better focused is that we begin to defend ourselves with a long list of reasons that our current focus is completely appropriate for us. While it's true that all of our behaviours have payoffs, it is also true that often our lack of focus is not optimal for us or the people around us.
The second reaction we might have is "it would be nice if that were possible." Often we are aware of being pulled in different directions or of struggling to keep our minds where we think we want our minds to be. In these situations, we long for focus but don't believe that we have the power to change either our attention or the way our attention feels to us.
There are better answers, answers that lead to focus that feels better and gets better results. They come from a wide variety of models, including NLP and hypnosis, and they have two things in common.
The first, punnily enough, is that they allow you to get your "calm on." Useful focus is focus that feels centred and relaxed. Whether you use techniques from nlp, hypnosis, performance psychology, or mindfulness to get there, when you arrive you feel that there is a quiet in the midst of the commotion around you.
The second is that they begin with paying attention to what you value. If you like problem solving, you do this by having a representation of what "good" would be like, finding the differences between what is and what you want, and then making corrections. If you like positive approaches, you begin to notice what is already working and use those strengths to build. Either way, knowing what is of value to you guides your attention and creates focus.
It's difficult to correct focus without a systematic approach. Coaching and training help enormously. If you'd like to be calm and attentive to what you value, come to an NLP Canada Training event or course. You'll feel better, focus better, and pay more attention to the values that are guiding you when you are at your best.
