Greetings!
NLP is a set of practices for recognizing when it's time to make a change and supporting that change so that it gets positive results. We wouldn't be very good models for our clients if we did not have the courage and resources to make big changes ourselves. Last month, our founder, Chris Keeler, announced that he would be taking an indefinite leave from the business. He will be taking time to make and integrate important changes for himself and his family.
All of us who have worked with Chris respect the integrity of his decision and wish him very, very well. He will always be part of our learning and development in NLP, and we will hope that when it is again appropriate for him, he will find new ways to share his skills and experience. For many years, Chris has worked at the cutting edge of techniques for integrating conscious and unconscious processes through sensory awareness. He is a fine practitioner, a master hypnotist, and a model of how to identify and use leverage points for change. We will miss him.
This summer, a new team will take shape at NLP Canada Training. It is an exciting time and we look forward to unveiling a strong and energetic vision this fall. Practitioners studying with us this summer will get a preview of the new range of skills, backgrounds and abilities that our training team and leadership will bring to our work. We will have stronger core programs and a wider range of evening offerings than ever before. We are all very excited at the new possibilities that we will be opening up.
Change happens. The question is not whether your life will change but whether you will be resourceful enough to navigate change so that it leads to results you like. When you open yourself to the influence of great people and interesting ideas, it is much easier to find what you need to get where you want to go.
I am very grateful for the energy and resources of very good friends,
Linda

Tuesday July 12, 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm Talking to Your Kids
Whether your children are toddlers or teens, this evening course will give you practical advice for listening to what they are saying with their words and behaviours and for talking in a way that gets through to them. Learn the basics of pacing and leading with behaviour and words; learn the benefits of sharing stories (not using them to lecture); and develop patterns of behaviour that avoid resistance and build your family relationships. No charge but donations to Room to Read are encouraged.
Tuesday, July 26, 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm Need a Shift? Practice for Practitioners
Brush off your manual, pick your favourite edits, and come out for a practice session with other people who know how to give a shift - or who hope that shift will happen for them this summer. Linda and the training team will be out to demonstrate, encourage, and provide resources. This is a great chance to review your skills and practice with people who will enjoy playing with you. It's also a great chance to ask other people how they would handle sticky situations or choice points that haven't shifted for you yet. It's even likely that Linda will share a particularly useful story. No charge for practitioners trained at NLP Canada Training and their guests.

States and Stories: An NLP Guide for Storytellers
New Code NLP works on the presupposition that state drives performance. Whether or not you have a step-by-step plan, you can get results if you have a clear intention and the right state for doing what you want to do. This is very good news for anyone who wants to tell stories more effectively. Effective storytelling is best done by someone with a clear intention and a state that allows for rapport and movement. Let's take a closer look at how to apply this insight so that you can use stories more effectively.
We'll begin by noticing that stories provide sensory information about an experience so that listeners can imagine what they are hearing. Now notice that if you are seeing and hearing and feeling the way you would in a particular state, you will enter that state automatically. You cannot inhabit the physiology of the state without experiencing that state. So if someone tells a story that gives information to your senses, you begin to shift from your state to the state suggested by the story.
There's more. Every story is a chain of states. As characters and events change, the sensory correlates (information about what you should imagine seeing or hearing or feeling) also change. Every story allows us to imagine moving from one state into another, almost as fluidly as we do in real life. The difference, of course, is the storyteller knows what states are coming and where they are leading. Storytelling is, among other things, the art of guiding listeners through a series of states so that they move easily and naturally from the state where they start to the state where the storyteller wants them to finish.
How does this influence the way effective storytellers deliver their stories? Essentially, the storyteller has to have a conscious awareness of two things: the state where listeners will be when the story begins and the state into which the storyteller wants to deliver them at the end of the story. As long as the teller has a clear and ecological intention for the story, any story that comes to mind will fit this pattern. More than this, even pre-planned stories will lead from the common ground of the opening to new common ground in the closing. All the teller must do is focus on building a connection and having a clear intention.
So, whether you begin with a story you want to tell or a situation in which you want to tell a story, begin with the end in mind. Be very clear about the state you want to create in your audience by telling the story. Then clear your mind and focus on making a connection. Use the beginning of your story to build bridges between the states in the story and the states in the room. As you notice them coming together, move the story forward into the first of the steps that will move from where you are to where you're going. You won't have to think about labelling each state or knowing how many steps to take. The story will tell.
All you need to do, is hold your intention, make the connection, and let the words flow.
That's how to tell a story.

Why not smile about it?
In NLP courses, we often talk about the links between physiology, facial expression and internal states. "Fake it till you make it" is often the order of the day when we want to use our bodies to guide our minds into a more useful or productive state.
This short video takes the idea one step further. Could learning to smile more give you super powers? Watch and find out.

New Video Game Offers Practice in Calibration
Rockstar Games recently released L.A. Noire, a video game that offers you a chance to practice your calibration skills using your PS3 or XBox360.
Here's how one reviewer describes the key element in the game:
"Lighter on gunplay and beatdowns than most games of its ilk, it's like Grand Theft Auto for people who believe the mind is the deadliest weapon of all.
The game's signature innovation is a technology that allowed Australia-based developer Team Bondi to capture the performance nuances of actors playing the roles of the game's digital characters. Every time Phelps questions a witness, suspect or victim, players must read non-verbal cues on the subject's face to determine if they're being honest, lying or simply not telling the whole story.
It's an absolutely intriguing gameplay element, and makes L.A. Noire's many interrogation scenes - like my grilling of the movie producer's wife - as tense as any white-knuckle firefight in a traditional shoot-em-up."
Visit the game's website to watch video trailers that give you a good idea of the kind of calibration you could be practicing while playing L. A. Noire.

Just one more thing
It's been a complicated couple of months. Maybe you have had months like that from time to time. Maybe you've turned a corner and run into a wall of rock or a washed-out bridge or a steep drop into deep water. It happens to everyone now and then.
NLP allows you to focus your intention, and to refocus quickly when situations change. It is not a magic wand, but it is a remarkably resilient set of processes for thinking about what you want, trying stuff to get it, and bouncing back when something you try does not go as planned. More than this, it's a good way to think about building the relationships that build resilience.
There's a really important question that many NLP and other self-development techniques often leave out. The question is this: "Who in your life will support you in the change you want to make?"
Feel free to ask this question of yourself, your boss, your clients and your families. Wherever you find people who want to make changes for themselves or others, you will find people who will benefit from answering this question.
When good people support you and push you towards the results you have defined for yourself, you can do remarkable things. When you have great people in your life, it's easier to set good goals and pursue them with both congruence and joy. When you turn a corner into a landscape you didn't expect, you learn really quickly.
We have a great community of good people at NLP Canada Training.
