We wish you magic and miracles this holiday season

Does it sound like a very big wish? An impossible dream?  We suppose that depends on how you think about it.

Because we are confident that you can think of a time when you watched snowflakes against a street light, or saw a small child light up brighter than a Christmas tree, or opened a gift that was exactly right.  We know you can think of a time when someone became your friend or provided an unexpected resource just when you really needed it.  We believe that there has been a moment when you found you knew what you wanted - and that it was within your reach.

We wish you congruence. We wish you the courage to reach and to change. We wish you connections that bring you support and make you smile.

We wish you magic and miracles this holiday season.

Linda Ferguson30 Posts in 30 Days?

I noticed this morning that if I post every day until the end of December (I can even take Christmas off), I could complete my 500th post by the end of 2009. That seems like a worthy effort.

So let's take a moment and think about what it would take to make it happen. Yes, I have a computer and a data-capable cell phone so even if one is off-line, the other could serve in a pinch. I don't have much time, but it doesn't have to take much time to post. I have lots of ideas and I know more will come to me when I am writing more.

Necessary resources: check!

So what's the next useful question. Is it "what strategy will you use to ensure that you blog every day? " Or is it "what back up plans will you put in place to support you?" Or even, "what other resources will give you what you need to get this done?"

These are all very good questions. But they are not the next question I will ask myself.

That question is: "Can you imagine yourself writing a post every day this month? Can you see and hear and feel what it will mean to sit down every day and talk to the people who read your blog?"

Because. . . if I can imagine it, then I can use strategies and resources and back up plans.

It begins with imagining. With creating patterns of thought that include this achievement. With weaving it into the way I see myself and my world (and hear and feel) for the next thirty days.

As I am imagining, I can pull in useful beliefs and I can tell myself useful stories about how and why I will do this thing and what will happen as a result.

It starts with imagining. Not reasoning or resourcing. It starts with imagining.

Packing for Your Destination

When you go away on holiday, you probably spend some time gathering what you will need when you reach your destination.  You might spend a little time planning what to wear on the plane or in the car, but most of your excitement is saved for reaching your destination.

Isn't it funny that we spend so much time figuring out how to reach our goals and so little time preparing for what we will do when we get there? It's as though we believe that just arriving will be enough.

It wouldn't be enough on a holiday. We would have to run out to shop for clothes that were warmer or cooler, more dressed up or more dressed down.  We might need a parka or a bathing suit. We might need our favourite kind of coffee or a good book to read.

In a typical goal-setting process, we assume that we will know what to pack for our destination. We ask questions about how we know we want a goal and what we will need to achieve it. We seldom ask what we will need as a result of achieving it.

The problem is even more pronounced when we are setting goals with other people  We may tell the people we manage what we expect of them and what they need to do to meet our expectations.  How often do we also tell them what they need to prepare now so that they will be ready for what comes after they meet the goal?

What else could we be doing so that we arrive at our destination prepared for what comes next?

Ask yourself this question: who would know what I will need when I get where I am going? You might be surprised at the answer you give yourself. When someone pops into your mind, allow yourself to be curious about what they know that you want to know.  It might help to imagine that you put on a hat or shoes belonging to that person as a sign that you are "putting on" their qualities, skills and beliefs.

Reflect for a moment and notice that you already have a better sense of what you will need when you get there.  You might even be surprised to know that you have already begun to prepare so that when you arrive, you will be able to 'put on' the qualities you need.

You know other people who will know what you need. Step into the shoes of two or three of them. Enjoy knowing what they know as you enjoy having the strengths, skills and beliefs that they have.

So now you know what you need to pack.  Of course, you need a good map to get you where you want to go.  But isn't it easier to imagine yourself on that path now that you know that everything you need to thrive after your achievement is being gathered and prepared?

Yes, it's useful to have a back up plan while preparing your strategy for getting what you want. It's also useful to have a jump-forward plan that tells you how you will feel, and what you will need, when you are busy enjoying life after achievement. Assume you can do what you need to do to get what you want. Prepare to enjoy that destination when you reach it.

You might even find you get there faster when you pack the right stuff.
