Just Think Outside
...the place for creativity
Greetings!

For the past three years I've had the opportunity to make images of the annual Sculpture Walk for Kingsport Tennessee's Cultural Arts Division.

Sculpture Walk VI was curated by Peggy Wood Townsend who selected 10 sculptures from the 47 works submitted.  Peggy is the interim director of Public Art Chattanooga and co-owner of Townsend Atelier.

I enjoy the challenge of making images of these sculptures and appreciate being a part of the Sculpture Walk again this year.

Below are four of the sculptures along with a link to see the rest.

Take care,

Jeffrey

Waiting

Light makes photography. Embrace light. Admire it. Love it. But above all, know light. Know it for all you are worth, and you will know the key to photography.

Sculpture Walk VI

This year the sculptures were installed from Wednesday May 2nd through Friday May 4th.  High resolution images of the sculptures needed to be ready for release to the press by Sunday evening.

Each sculpture has its own personality and a time of day when it looks its best.  However, until you see the sculptures you have no idea what that time of day will be.  Even then you can't be sure until you begin to photograph and view the results.

Shawn Morin - A Lily for My Lady

I chose early morning light for "A Lily for My Lady" and also this camera position to be able to show 2008's Four Elements sculpture within the traffic circle at Market and Broad streets and in the Clock Tower in the distance.  I used flash to balance the light falling on the sculpture with the brighter light of the sky.

Jim Galucci - Arrow Arch

Another factor that comes into play is that the sculptures are downtown so you can be dodging traffic as you photograph.   "Arrow Arch" was the most challenging this year and I returned to photograph it five times over four days.  The photograph I chose was taken from the middle of the street.

I again used flash to highlight the sculpture against the sky.

 Gregory Johnson - Birdwatchers

For "Birdwatchers" I also returned several times to see the impact of light at different times of the day.  I chose early afternoon light which highlighted his face and positioned my camera so the trees could be seen behind him.  The front of library building being in shadow also helped to make the sculpture stand out from the background.

Hanna Jubran - Earth, Water, Fire, Wind

For this image I wanted to emphasize the size of the sculpture.  I waited until there was no traffic in sight and then stood on Main Street to be able to include the sculpture and the Clock Tower in the same frame.  I also liked the natural balance of light between the sculpture and tower.

Select the link above to see an eighty second slide show of the installation of this piece.  The sculpture arrived in two pieces and a crane was used to put them into place.

Hanna was also the sculptor that made "Four Elements" seen in the first image which was purchased and found a permanent home in Kingsport.

Kingsport TN

May 5, 2012

Kingsport Tennessee's first annual Party on Market celebration of the arts was a success.  The day began at 10am with a sculpture walk led by curator Peggy Townsend.

This was followed by the Art Market which was open from 11a.m. to 4p.m. with booths set up on Market Street.  Visitors enjoyed face painting, food vendors, a ballet performance, musicians in the street, theater performance and more.  In addition, the carvers and painters from the Kingsport Carousel Project were displaying some of the animals they've been working on.

Next year's Party on Market is scheduled for April 26 and 27.

The Meaning in Trees

Panoramic Gallery of the William King Museum, Abingdon VA

October 30 through December 1, 2012

Trees are an integral part of many of my images. From a tree standing alone in the landscape to a tree-lined trail through the woods they elicit feelings of wonder, strength and comfort.

I invite you to view The Meaning in Trees and to join me for an artist's reception on Thursday evening November 8th.

I greatly appreciate your interest in my photography and for subscribing to Just Think Outside

Sincerely,
