This year the sculptures were installed from Wednesday May 2nd through Friday May 4th. High resolution images of the sculptures needed to be ready for release to the press by Sunday evening.
Each sculpture has its own personality and a time of day when it looks its best. However, until you see the sculptures you have no idea what that time of day will be. Even then you can't be sure until you begin to photograph and view the results.

Shawn Morin - A Lily for My Lady
I chose early morning light for "A Lily for My Lady" and also this camera position to be able to show 2008's Four Elements sculpture within the traffic circle at Market and Broad streets and in the Clock Tower in the distance. I used flash to balance the light falling on the sculpture with the brighter light of the sky.

Jim Galucci - Arrow Arch
Another factor that comes into play is that the sculptures are downtown so you can be dodging traffic as you photograph. "Arrow Arch" was the most challenging this year and I returned to photograph it five times over four days. The photograph I chose was taken from the middle of the street.
I again used flash to highlight the sculpture against the sky.

Gregory Johnson - Birdwatchers
For "Birdwatchers" I also returned several times to see the impact of light at different times of the day. I chose early afternoon light which highlighted his face and positioned my camera so the trees could be seen behind him. The front of library building being in shadow also helped to make the sculpture stand out from the background.
Hanna Jubran - Earth, Water, Fire, Wind
For this image I wanted to emphasize the size of the sculpture. I waited until there was no traffic in sight and then stood on Main Street to be able to include the sculpture and the Clock Tower in the same frame. I also liked the natural balance of light between the sculpture and tower.
Select the link above to see an eighty second slide show of the installation of this piece. The sculpture arrived in two pieces and a crane was used to put them into place.
Hanna was also the sculptor that made "Four Elements" seen in the first image which was purchased and found a permanent home in Kingsport.
