Greetings!

Sunset in Monument Valley B&W

Is there such a thing as being in the Right Place at the Right Time?

For photography I can answer that in a single word - YES.

However, being at that right place at the right time with camera in hand takes planning, dedication, hard work and maybe just a bit of luck.

The best images are made at the beginning and end of the day.  The light is softer and warmer, the shadows bring out the details of the landscape and with a bit of luck you can make a stunning image of a sunrise or sunset.

The weather is where luck becomes a factor.  After hiking several miles in the dark to make a sunrise image I find I am still at the mercy of the weather.

Some days I've been treated to a beautiful sunrise.  On other days clouds have covered the horizon and I quickly abandoned my original the image and searched for other subjects that look good on a cloudy day.

Below are images I made during a trip to Arizona and Utah.  They illustrate the images that can be made when the planning, hard work and weather come together

Take care,

Jeffrey

Successful people engage that creative part of their minds and ask, "Well, I wonder how else I can look at this problem? I wonder how else I could deal with this decision?  I wonder what other possibilities I have there?"

Is There a Right Place at the Right Time?

I arrived in Monument Valley in the dark and set up my camera near Artist's Point to await the dawn.  However, low-hanging clouds resulted in a colorless sunrise.

The next morning I again arrived in the dark.  Based upon my observations the previous day I decided to set up my camera for an image of The Mittens.  The clouds looked like they would again obscure the horizon but they lifted just before dawn and I was witness to an incredible sunrise.

The reddish light in the clouds lasted for less than two minutes before fading away.  I then turned 360 degrees to look for other potential images.  That is when I saw rainbow colors over a distant mesa.

Evening light gives the landscape a warm tone and the shadows help define the landscape.  This image was made above the Virgin River near Kayenta Utah.

The light at the ends of the day is just as important for black-and-white photography.  This image was made in Monument Valley early in the morning.

Though the next two images were made deep within a narrow canyon they would not have worked if the light had been directly overhead.  The colors would have been washed out and the contrast overpowering.

Solo Exhibition - Tipton-Haynes Historic Site - Johnson City TN

The Tipton-Haynes historic site in Johnson City TN is nearing the completion of a new exhibition hall.

The museum exhibits will span the history of the site beginning with the prehistoric Dire Wolf, continuing through the State of Franklin, the Civil War and ending with the creation of Johnson City.

The new hall includes a 500 square foot space for rotating exhibitions.  I am honored to have the inaugural exhibition in the Grace Brading Spurrell Gallery.  The museum will first open to the public at 10AM on Saturday September 24th and I invite you to visit with me in the gallery between 10am and noon.

My exhibition titled An Opportunity for a Dream will show the direct connection between Tipton-Haynes and Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains through images from both locations.
