Just Think Outside
...the place for creativity
Greetings!

Sunset in Monument Valley B&W

During a recent private photography lesson I talked about the importance of changing perspective.  After making your first image at a location you should  look to your left, your right, and directly behind you.

There are times when looking beyond your first impression of a scene is where the best image is found.

One example of this technique occurred when I was developing a photography workshop for the Art Association of Harrisburg.

To demonstrate this idea for the workshop I picked a spot along the Susquehanna River and made as many interesting images as I could without moving more than a few feet from the original spot.

There were so many possibilities that I returned to that same location the next week and made an image that was later published in Great Britain's Black and White Photography magazine.

A change of perspective can bring amazing results.

Take care,

Jeffrey

A Change of Perspective

This was the first image I made when I arrived on the banks of the Susquehanna River in Harrisburg PA.  The sun had just risen and was bathing this Weeping Cherry tree in morning light.

Spring is Blooming

I then walked closer to the River and saw this runner taking an early morning jog.  The runner gives perspective to the scene and you get a sense of the size of the bridge.

Next I walked closer to the River's edge.

I then switched to a zoom lens and concentrated on the patterns of the bridge and its reflection.

After making these images I decided there was one more I wanted to make.  I watched the weather patterns and then headed back to the river when the sky  was predicted to be cloudless.  I arrived just before dawn and waited for the sun to rise.

As I was lining up my image I saw a duck swimming in the shadows.  I thought if he could swim in my direction...

After several minutes he headed my way and I made this image as he swam into the scene.  This image was chosen to appear in Great Britain's Black and White Photography magazine.

Solo Exhibition - Tipton-Haynes Historic Site - Johnson City TN

The Tipton-Haynes historic site in Johnson City TN is nearing the completion of a new exhibition hall.

The museum exhibits will span the history of the site beginning with the prehistoric Dire Wolf, continuing through the State of Franklin, the Civil War and ending with the creation of Johnson City.

The new hall includes a 500 square foot space for rotating exhibitions.  I am honored to have the inaugural exhibition in the Grace Brading Spurrell Gallery.  The museum will first open to the public at 10AM on Saturday September 24th and I invite you to visit with me in the gallery between 10am and noon.

My exhibition titled An Opportunity for a Dream will show the direct connection between Tipton-Haynes and Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains through images from both locations.
