Seven years ago Ann Penley founded The Kingsport Fall Spectacular Photography Contest and Exhibition. Though the contest grew each year with almost 600 photographs entered last fall the Youth Division only had a small number of participants.
Ann and I were discussing ideas on how to increase youth participation and I suggested, and volunteered to teach, a youth photography workshop. Ann agreed and the two of us put together a photography workshop geared toward youth ages 8-15 years old. Our goal was for the students to learn and have fun at the same time.
We thought that by having the workshop in the spring it would give the students time to take advantage of photographic opportunities throughout the spring and summer and be prepared to enter their images in the Fall contest.
The result is "The Visual Storytelling Youth Photography Workshop" sponsored by "The Kingsport Fall Spectacular Photography Contest and Exhibition" which will be held on Saturday May 1, 2010 at the Downtown Kingsport Association on West Main Street in Kingsport Tennessee
Though the contest itself is open to youth of all ages, the workshop is open to those from the ages of 8-15. The only thing they need to bring is a camera. The workshop will run from 9 am to 1 pm and will be open to the first 12 youth registered. However, if the morning session fills and there are more youth that want to participate a second workshop will be held the same day from 2 pm to 6 pm.
The fee is $8.00 and pays for 2 submissions into the Fall contest. Parents are welcome, though not required, to stay with their youth throughout the workshop.
Deadline for registration is April 26, 2010. For more information and to register call Ann at 423-245-8559 or 423-914-5453.
