In this issue we continue with our second article in a three-part series about steps you can take to move forward towards a new job in 2010.

Take Three Easy Steps Forward Towards Landing the Job You Really Want!

Step 2 - Raise Your Hand

In my experience, people whose careers accelerate quickly aren't necessarily the best and the brightest in their field.  But, they are the ones focused on creating and maintaining high personal visibility in their profession and in their industry.

Start raising your hand to volunteer for key industry and professional roles so you increase your visibility and expand your network too.

  • Pick up the phone and volunteer for committee work at your professional or industry association. Join the board.

Look for opportunities where you get to work closely with fellow professionals on a regular basis.  That way, you'll deepen your network.  People recommend those they know and trust.  This strategy helps you forge those strong ties.

  • Talk to executive directors and board members at not-for-profit organizations that interest you.

They often need new members with professional expertise to join their boards and committees.  It's an easy way to broaden your network and get known by a wider mix of top professionals.

  • Submit articles to professional and industry journals on a regular basis. Volunteer to give a speech or a workshop at an upcoming conference.  Create a specialized survey and deliver the results.

These are easy ways for you to build your reputation as a top professional in your field.  Just watch consultants.  This is what they do to build and maintain their status as leading experts.

Soon you'll be right there with the movers and shakers.  Spend time with them.  Watch them closely.  Model their actions to get your career accelerating faster too.

In our next article in this series, Take Three Easy Steps Forward towards Landing the Job Really Want!, we'll talk about Step 3:  Building Lasting Connections.
