the Interview Expert Newsletter

Greetings!

Welcome to your latest issue of the Interview Expert newsletter.

Every issue explores the key elements of a successful job interview and strategic job search techniques - so you can master your skills and land the job you really want!

In this issue we talk about how to respond when the interviewer says, "What questions do you have for us?".

What's The #1 Question You Should Ask At Every Job Interview?

At the end of most interviews, you'll often be asked by interviewers, "Do you have any questions?" This is your chance to make a difference. Respond by asking, "Tell me about the issues and challenges that keep you awake at night." By asking this question, you can uncover exactly what issues the hiring organization is dealing with. It shows you're not interested in simply filling the position, but that you're someone who can help solve the organization's specific problems.

Here's why this question pays off for you.
  • It shows your interest in the hiring organization.
Most people willingly share their challenges and problems. And, they are usually delighted that someone finally cares enough to ask about them. By asking about their issues, you build important connections with the hiring organization.
  • You begin to see the challenges from their point of view.
By carefully listening to interviewers talking about the issues they face - in their own words - you can begin to understand exactly how they view the organization's challenges. Not only does this help you to better focus on their issues, but it saves you from blundering into a conversation about what you believe is the root issue and presenting solutions to a problem they may not even have quite figured out yet. If that happens, your message simply won't resonate with them or worse, may turn them off.
  • It helps you gain control.
Up to this point in the interview, you've simply been responding to questions. And sometimes, you may not have been able to clearly state your personal branding statement: that is, how your expertise can help solve their problems. But, listening to them describe their challenges gives you a natural segue. When they've finished, let them know exactly how you've dealt with the same or similar challenges in the past. This shows that you can offer solutions to their problems in a subtle yet powerful way that they'll remember.
By asking the #1 question, you engage in a deeper conversation with the interviewer - as a peer - and not just another job candidate. It's also a very direct way to sell yourself as the solution to their problems - so you can land the job you really want!
