News You Can Use...The Apopka Update

Peach Rose

Dear Friends,

It's been a busy month in the city of Apopka and our staff is hard at work planning the Old Florida Outdoor Festival scheduled for February 10-12, 2012. This two-day event will showcase the natural beauty of our city and have tons of activities for people of all ages, ending in a large scale concert at our state-of-the-art Amphitheater. (Performers to be announced). While February is still seven months away, make plans to be in town for this great event and help us spread the word!

We are also aggressively pursuing new business opportunities for the city. Rennovations are well underway for the UCF Incubator, which will be located in the old Barnhill's Restaurant on 441. We are reviewing bids and proposals for the fixed based operations at the airport facility, recently purchased by the City. As these projects move forward, I will keep you informed of their progress.

We are still working very closely with Pizzuti on our Town Center Project and will have an update and opportunity for further public input in the near future. Please take advantage of these public meetings to share your comments and suggestions.

Until next month, let's stay in touch!

Council Update

At the July 6th meeting, the Council gave final approval for Dollar General in Apopka. The vote was 4-1. This business is projected to bring 13 jobs to our city. The Council approved a Waffle House Restaurant on Main Street. This business is expected to bring 30-35 full time jobs & 15 part time jobs to our city.  Artist renderings of both locations are available for review at City Hall, or send me an email and I'll be happy to mail you a copy.

The Council approved the first reading of Ordinance #2220 (Small Scale Comprehensive Plan Amendment) & Ordinance #2221 (Changing the Zoning) of property located at 1017 and 1027 Rock Springs Road. The property owner has requested it be re-zoned to Commercial (C-1).

Legislative Update

HB 45 - Firearms and Ammuniton - Passed both houses. This bill imposes a financial penalty on governments, elected officials or staff that adopt policies or take enforcement action that violates (or is stricter than) the existing state law preemption of firearm and ammunition regulation.

HB 901 - Moving Services - Passed both houses. This bill preempts local governments from adopting ordinances regulating transactions relating to movers of household goods or moving brokers. Cities that adopted an ordinance relating to movers before January 1, 2011, are not subject to the preemption.

HB 227 - Military Absentee Ballots- Passed both houses. This bill provides that an absent uniformed services voter or overseas voter who fails to receive a properly requested absentee ballot may use the official federal write-in absentee ballot or a similar ballot to vote in any federal and certain state or local elections involving two or more candidates.

HONORING THOSE WHO SERVED

Thanks to Apopka resident Linda Laurendeau, the city of Apopka is proud to introduce our Veteran and Public Safety Street Naming Program.

If your family, business or civic organization would like to honor a deceased member of our armed forces or public safety personnel (police officers and firefighters) you many now do so through our new program!

These brave men and women gave their lives for their country and community. This program ensures their sacrifice will never be forgotten.
