News You Can Use...The Apopka Update

Dear Friends,
It's the season of Thanksgiving, and now more than ever we need to reflect on and be thankful for what is most important in our lives...faith, family and friends.

As we pause to give thanks, I want to extend a heartfelt "thank you" to all our residents that got involved in their city over the past 11 months. Whether you are a volunteer, community activist, business owner, engaged citizen or informed voter...you are appreciated!

Thank you for all you do to make Apopka a great place to live, work and play. It's always makes me smile when I speak with someone who is new to our city, or an "outside observer" and they comment on how  the sense of "community" is immediately apparent. That's something we should all be proud of and celebrate as we begin looking forward to 2011.

You will be hearing much more about this in the coming months as we move forward with our Town Center Project. That "sense of  community" is at the forefront of our minds as we plan for this exciting development.

Remember, this is YOUR city and your tax dollars at work! So I encourage to remain engaged and until next month...let's stay in touch!

Council Update
At the October 6th meeting, the Council heard from many concerned citizens regarding the installation of a Verizon Wireless cell phone tower on the Grace Pointe Church property. Much of the opposition came from residents living in adjacent neighborhoods who were concerned about health risks, property values and asthetic appearance of the tower. The project was approved 3-2 after a healthy debate by the public and City Council.

The City is in the process of updating our web site, so stay tuned for further developments and a new, more user friendly site coming soon! The Council also approved the first reading on three small scale comprehensive plan amendments and four zoning changes at the October 6th meeting.

At the October 20th meeting, the Council heard the second reading and then adopted the above referenced zoning and comprehensive plan amendments. We also approved the Final development plan/plat for further expansion of Apopka Family Health Center-Community Health Centers, Inc. This expansion will consist of three medical office buildings and parking lot to accommodate those facilities.

Our staff and Council continue to work with the Department of Community Affairs (DCA) regarding our large scale Comprehensive Plan Amendment, which includes the Wekiva Parkway Interchange Plan.
 Your safety is OUR  priority...
November's Tip -  As the holidays approach, there's no doubt that cell phones will be at the top of many gift lists... especially for teens. Knowing how to use them wisely is key in keeping kids safe while enjoying their new phone.

The National Crime Prevention Council  has an excellent family guide entitled "Cell Phone Savvy" that offers the following tips:
  1. Do not give out your address or other personal information on a phone call, text or email to people you don't know, or if others can hear you.
  2. Do not respond to an email, text, picture or voice message from someone you don't know.
  3. Be aware of your surroundings and understand when talking or texting is appropriate and when it is not.
  4. Remember that photos you send stay online FOREVER and can be sent to anyone!

Download a free copy of this informative brochure today  and let's make this holiday season safe and enjoyable for all!

PUBLIC MEETING FOR TOWN CENTER PROJECT YIELDS MANY IDEAS
On November 10th, the city of Apopka held a public meeting regarding our Town Center Project with master developer, Pizutti.  While attendance was minimal, the conversation was quite engaging with the public offering lots of great ideas for new venues (retail, institutional, residential and civic). The staff from Pizutti presented some very interesting and creative development design concepts that will create a beautiful, family friendly and pedestrian friendly atmosphere!

REMEMBERING THOSE WHO SERVED

As I write this newsletter, it happens to be Veteran's Day. In the spirit of thanksgiving, let's all pause today and everyday to say "thank you" to those brave men and women who proudly served and are serving their country at home or abroad. Freedom isn't free, it comes at a very high price. May we never forget those who paid that price and honor those who returned home. "Thank you".
