Council Update At the October 6th meeting, the Council heard from many concerned citizens regarding the installation of a Verizon Wireless cell phone tower on the Grace Pointe Church property. Much of the opposition came from residents living in adjacent neighborhoods who were concerned about health risks, property values and asthetic appearance of the tower. The project was approved 3-2 after a healthy debate by the public and City Council.
The City is in the process of updating our web site, so stay tuned for further developments and a new, more user friendly site coming soon! The Council also approved the first reading on three small scale comprehensive plan amendments and four zoning changes at the October 6th meeting.
At the October 20th meeting, the Council heard the second reading and then adopted the above referenced zoning and comprehensive plan amendments. We also approved the Final development plan/plat for further expansion of Apopka Family Health Center-Community Health Centers, Inc. This expansion will consist of three medical office buildings and parking lot to accommodate those facilities.
Our staff and Council continue to work with the Department of Community Affairs (DCA) regarding our large scale Comprehensive Plan Amendment, which includes the Wekiva Parkway Interchange Plan. |
Your safety is OUR priority...
November's Tip - As the holidays approach, there's no doubt that cell phones will be at the top of many gift lists... especially for teens. Knowing how to use them wisely is key in keeping kids safe while enjoying their new phone. The National Crime Prevention Council has an excellent family guide entitled "Cell Phone Savvy" that offers the following tips:
- Do not give out your address or other personal information on a phone call, text or email to people you don't know, or if others can hear you.
- Do not respond to an email, text, picture or voice message from someone you don't know.
- Be aware of your surroundings and understand when talking or texting is appropriate and when it is not.
- Remember that photos you send stay online FOREVER and can be sent to anyone!
