Message From the Principals
Dear Parents,
The Fairfax County School Board approved a change to the academic calendar on Thursday because it has used only one of its weather-related makeup days. The last day of school for students will now be June 15, instead of June 19.The board says that the schedule could change again in the case of an emergency.
We want to thank Mrs. Boyle and Mrs. Matthews, the landscaping committee, Scout Pack 159, our students and parents for their efforts yesterday to clean-up and mulch the areas around our school entrance. The landscaped areas look wonderful!
At a recent School Board meeting, Ms. Sheehy had the honor of accepting on behalf of Fox Mill ES The 2012 Governor's Award for Educational Excellence, a recognition given to schools that have met all state and federal achievement benchmarks for at least two consecutive years and for elementary schools that have achieved excellence goals for elementary reading. This is the third consecutive year that Fox Mill ES has received Virginia's highest educational award. Congratulations to Fox Mill students and staff!
We are so very fortunate at Fox Mill ES to have a tremendous pool of dedicated and talented volunteers. To express our appreciation, the Fox Mill ES staff is hosting a Volunteer Reception (featuring staff-made hors d'oeuvres and desserts) in order to honor and thank all our volunteers. I am writing today to personally invite you to join me at that Reception on Wednesday, April 18, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Fox Mill ES volunteers provide an enormous service and enhance the learning environment for all our students in so many ways - the Boosterthon; Family Fun Night; after school clubs; 6th Grade Talent Show; GRACE Art; picture days; preparing hot chocolate for patrols; reading to students; coordinating class activities; Foxy Wear; assisting with student community service opportunities; assembling Tuesday packets; Box Tops for Education; arranging display cases; photocopying; chaperoning field trips; assisting teachers in their classrooms, etc. The list goes on and on! Fox Mill ES would not be the award-winning school it is today without our volunteers! If you have volunteered in any way, We hope you will give the Fox Mill ES students and staff an opportunity to say thank you by joining us at the Volunteer Reception! We hope to see you there!
On Friday, April 20, Fox Mill ES faculty and 6th grade teams will play Forest Edge ES at South Lakes HS. Come and cheer on your school! It is going to be a fun evening.
Our office staff is working on plans to assist with the registration of our new kindergarten students this coming fall. Our school will be holding kindergarten registration on Monday, April 23 at 1:30 p.m. Students who will be five years of age on or before September 30, 2012 are encouraged to be registered that day at our "Kindergarten Round-Up". Please contact Ms. Mehm, our school registrar, if you have any questions. She can be contacted at 703-262-2700. Please inform your neighbors if they have children who may need to register and may not be receiving this newsletter.
From May 15 thru May 31 our students in grade 3-6 will be taking their SOL tests. We appreciate the parents who have made a special effort not to schedule doctor or dentist appointments during their child's testing days. In the event that a child is absent on the day of testing, make-ups will be given during the remainder of the testing window. We encourage you to acknowledge the importance of these assessments with your children. Make sure that they have a good night's sleep and a good breakfast on testing days.
Sincerely,
Pat Sheehy Brian Moose
Principal Assistant Principal
