Fox Prints March 5
Message from the Principals
Dear Parents,
As mentioned in our past Fox Prints, on Friday evening, March 2, Fox Mill ES participated in the annual GO Tournament at Fox Mill Elementary. The tournament consisted of children from Fox Mill and Great Falls Elementary Schools. Students from both schools who are in grades from kindergarten through sixth competed against others at similar grade levels in First Capture GO. The level winners then competed for the championship. We would like to congratulate those who received awards as well as all the students who participated in the competition. We also want to thank the parents who coached and planned the tournament.
Last Monday Fox Mill ES and Waples Mill ES staffs participated in a joint inservice at FMES on the new standards based progress reports which will be used in all FCPS elementary schools in 2012-2013. A standards-based progress report measures a student's progress according to how he or she is performing on expected standards. It provides detailed information about what a student is learning and can demonstrate in each content area. We will be sending home a pamphlet on this new progress report in the students' Tuesday Folders this week.
For additional information, please go to http://www.fcps.edu/is/elemprogreport/index.shtml.

Japanese Doll Display TODAY
|
The Fox Mill Japanese Cultural Committee will be a display of traditional Japanese dolls in the library on Monday, March 5, from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
Hi-na Ma-tsu-ri (Doll Festival) is celebrated in Japan on March 3. This is the day set aside for families to pray for their daughters' future happiness. Many families with daughters display special dolls, known as "Hina-ningyo".
The display represents a Japanese royal wedding in the Heian Period, about 1000 years ago. The dolls include the Emperor and Empress, three court ladies, five boy musicians, two ministers, and three servants.
At the bottom levels are furniture, dishes, carriages, and traditional decorations. The costume of the Empress is called the "Juuni-hitoe" (twelve layered ceremonial robe). Even today the juuni-hitoe is worn at the Royal family's wedding ceremony.
Look carefully at the dolls' faces. The two ministers were said to be a little drunk from the wedding party -- one has a pale face and the other a red face. The three servants' faces show laughter, anger, and sadness.

PTA Assemblies for 2011-2012
| This year the PTA set aside funds so that Fox Mill students could enjoy five quality assemblies during the 2011-2012 school year.
The first featured Jay Mattioli, a musician who became well known on "America's Got Talent". His magical and motivational assembly was captivating.
The second was given by Brian Curry, who combined math and magic in a performance that encouraged students to turn academic weaknesses into strengths and to love math!
The third assembly featured The Dixie Power Trio, a group of musicians who taught students all about The Blues and the music and instruments of Louisiana.
The fourth assembly is the family assembly on Friday, March 9 at 7 p.m. This assembly will be given by Mad Science and will be an exciting evening, highlighting chemical reactions and the scientific process.
Our final assembly of the year will feature "Billy B" on March 20. Billy B is a highly rated performer who makes scientific learning fun through song and dance. His "Waltz of the World" performance will focus on our earth and the reason for seasonal changes.
If you have any questions about assemblies, contact the PTA at foxmillpta@yahoo.com. |
