REBOUNDERZ, an indoor trampoline arena, welcomes Fox Mill Elementary to celebrate School Spirit Night

On Feb. 27, Rebounderz is having a spirit night for Fox Mill students and their family and friends. You can jump for 2 hours for the price of one hour between 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. The cost is $15.75 a person. WeDo Robotics Starts in April; Register Now
WeDo Robotics, Grades 1-3
Registration Now Open

WeDo Robotics introduces young students to simple robotics systems and programming logic. The class will provide a hands-on learning experience to actively engage children's creative thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Students will learn to build and program robots using the WeDo "drag-and-drop" graphical programming software.

Class projects include everything from an alligator that snaps its mouth shut when anything comes near (using the motion sensor), to an airplane that plays different sounds as you move it (using the tilt sensor). Each pair of students will receive a WeDo robotics kit and laptop computer for use during the class.

Please note, parents may be asked to come and help keep the class on track. Students need to listen to directions. Inappropriate behavior can result in removal from the class with a limited refund.

Class will be offered on Thursdays from April 12 to May 31 from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. in the cafeteria.  Cost is $195. Class size will be 8-12 students only.  For more information, click here to open a flyer. Click here for a registration form. Or see foxmillpta.com/programs/robotics_classes for both forms. Please fill out the registration form and send it in with your student as soon as possible. Payment will be due once the classes have met minimum enrollment.

Japanese Doll Display on March 5
Japanese doll display photo

The Fox Mill Japanese Cultural Committee will be a display of traditional Japanese dolls in the library on Monday, March 5, from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

Hi-na Ma-tsu-ri (Doll Festival) is celebrated in Japan on March 3. This is the day set aside for families to pray for their daughters' future happiness. Many families with daughters display special dolls, known as "Hina-ningyo".

The display represents a Japanese royal wedding in the Heian Period, about 1000 years ago. The dolls include the Emperor and Empress, three court ladies, five boy musicians, two ministers, and three servants.

At the bottom levels are furniture, dishes, carriages, and traditional decorations. The costume of the Empress is called the "Juuni-hitoe" (twelve layered ceremonial robe). Even today the juuni-hitoe is worn at the Royal family's wedding ceremony.

Look carefully at the dolls' faces. The two ministers were said to be a little drunk from the wedding party -- one has a pale face and the other a red face. The three servants' faces show laughter, anger, and sadness.

Parent Survey in March
Your Views and Opinions Are Important to Us!

This spring a random sample of Fox Mill Elementary parents will receive the Parent Opinion Survey.  This survey is part of the Performance Assessment and Evaluation Process and offers parents an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various issues related to our school.  These issues include safety, parent involvement, curriculum, communications, and expectations for student achievement and behavior.

The survey will arrive in the mail in early March 2012 and should be returned directly to the Fairfax County Public Schools' Office of Student Testing for processing.  If you receive a copy of the Parent Opinion Survey, please take a few minutes to complete and return the survey.  Your opinions matter.
