PTA Meeting: Speaker's Corner
A representative from Reston Interfaith will be coming to the PTA meeting this Tuesday, Nov. 1.  The speaker will talk about homelessness in our area, and how Fox Mill's generous support of the Walk for the Homeless helps this vulnerable part of our society.  The presentation is expected to begin at 7:45 p.m.  The PTA meeting starts at 7 p.m.
6th Annual Walk for the Homeless Thursday

homeless walk photo from 2010

It's not too late!  If your student and family members want to participate in the mini-walk after school on Nov. 3, they can turn in forms to their teacher anytime right up until the mini-walk!!  Deadline for shirts was last Friday, but if you register now, your t-shirts will be available about a week after the walk. If you have already registered, t-shirts will be distributed at school on the day of the walk.

Register one child and all siblings walk for free.

Reston Interfaith has been so impressed and grateful for Fox Mill's support over the past five years and is aware of the increasing number of financial requests being made to parents in this current economic climate, that they have kindly offered to help out.  If you pay a minimum of $20 (your first child's registration), they will sponsor any additional children that you wish to register from your family.

We do need a signed registration form for all children who are walking. This is needed for Reston Interfaith and for our records as the registration gives permission for your child to stay and walk with us. If not registered, your student will not be allowed to stay for the walk. Only kindergartners will need adult supervision at the mini-walk. Following the mini-walk, pick-up will be in the front of the school at 4:30 p.m.

The SCA officers visited the Embry Rucker Shelter last week and they shared with the rest of the students what they have learned about how the shelter provides for the homeless in our community. The SCA talked on the Morning News Show and in the classrooms. The students have signed a foot showing that all of Fox Mill ES is working on ending homelessness; it is displayed in the cafeteria. The librarian has been reading a wonderful book, Ana's Story, to the students; it was written by a child who had actually lived at the Embry Rucker Shelter. Click here to take a look at the book.

The walk is a lot of fun and we will have some tasty treats lined up for the students. We walk directly after school on Nov. 3, rain or shine!

Click here for more information. Click here for a registration form. Or see foxmillpta.com/events/walk-for-the-homelessE-mail Bernie Boyle at  bernie.mick@verizon.net if you have any questions.

Thank you for helping Fox Mill ES end homelessness!

Our walk last year helped to house one homeless person.......WOW...Let's do that again!!!

 Student-Parent Surveys Due Friday

Each year you are asked to complete the Student-Parent Survey (also referred to as the Federal Survey or Impact Aid Form).  The survey will arrive at your home via U. S. Mail at the end of this month.  Please complete all of the requested information and return the form to school as soon as possible, but no later than Nov. 4.

If for some reason your form has not made it back to school by Nov. 4, you can turn it in during our parent teacher conference days, Nov. 7 and 8.  A desk will be manned at the school entrance (between the hours of 7:45 a.m. and 4:15 p.m.) to accept the forms. At that time, if you arrive without your completed form, we will have another copy available for you and will request that you take a minute to complete it while you are here.

You will be able to complete your "assignment" in the short turnaround time by preparing ahead.  Your "homework" will be to research and gather the following information: COMPLETE work addresses (including street numbers and zip codes) and work phone numbers for both parents/guardians. And here's the best part about this early notice of the assignment's due date:  You can start your research now!

It is extremely important that we get a survey back from each and every student.  The school system receives much needed financial support from the government as a result of your cooperation in this project.   Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Kids Helping Kids: 5th Grade in Nov.
Kids Helping Kids logo fall 2011A huge thanks to the 6th grade parents for generously donating the food for the Kids Helping Kids program. On Friday, all 6th graders learned about the issue of hunger and assembled 100 bags that went to another local school for students to have food on the weekends.

On Nov. 18, all students in the 5th grade will participate in the Kids Helping Kids program and will learn about hunger and assemble bags of food for local students in need. The families of 5th grade students are invited to donate the food needed for the bags and to volunteer to help during the bag assemble on Nov. 18. If you wish to donate, please sign up at www.signupgenius.com/go/kids143. Food is due as soon as possible and no later than Nov. 15. Donations are completely voluntary; all 5th grade students participate in the program regardless of whether a family donates or not.

To learn more about this program, see foxmillpta.com/programs/kids-helping-kids/.

Hot Chocolate Volunteers Needed
We need volunteers to serve hot chocolate to our Safety Patrols. Hot chocolate service will start the week of Nov. 21 (if it is cold enough) and be served through March. We only serve when the temperature is 32 degrees or below.

This is a great volunteer opportunity for those that work or have little ones at home and cannot be at school during the day. This is done before school hours, and siblings are welcome as well. Schedules are done on a monthly basis so you will know your day well ahead of time and can always switch with someone should you need to.

Set up is at 8 a.m. in the cafeteria; all supplies are provided as well as detailed instructions -- this is very easy.

Hot chocolate service for the patrols begins at 8:10 a.m. and concludes at 8:40 a.m. Clean up and you are done before 9 a.m.

Our patrols work very hard to keep everyone safe and happy while at school. This is our way of thanking them for all they do, especially when it is freezing outside. The patrols really look forward to this each winter.

If you have questions or can help with this program, e-mail Kerry Diederich at diederich9@aol.com or call her at 703-860-1808. Please provide your contact phone number and e-mail and if you have a preference of day of the week you would be able to serve. When e-mailing, please put Hot Chocolate in the subject line.
Holiday Secret Shop Volunteers Needed

Believe it or not the holidays are fast approaching and it is time for our annual secret shop!  Children shop for their friends or family from a huge selection of gifts. The best part is that the gifts are their secret, because 6th grade shopping buddies help our children select, pay, and wrap!  (AND NO PEEKING PARENTS!)

Where: Fox Mill Elementary School Gymnasium

When:  Saturday, Dec. 3, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Questions: E-mail Nicole Lynch at  nlynch_98@yahoo.com

Secret shop volunteers are needed to help with set-up on Friday. Volunteers are also needed on Saturday to help hand gifts to the children once they have made their choices.  It is a lot of fun to watch them make their decisions, all on their own!  This is also a great opportunity for older children who need community service/volunteer hours.

Volunteer shifts are:

Friday, Dec. 2 at 3:30 p.m., set-up

Saturday, Dec. 3 from 8:45 a.m. to 11 a.m., AM shift

Saturday, Dec. 3 from 11 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., PM shift

If you can help with set-up on Friday, or for a shift on Saturday, e-mail Nicole Lynch at nlynch_98@yahoo.com.

Father-Daughter Dance
Fox Mill ES will be hosting its second annual Father-Daughter Dance on Friday, Jan. 6, 2012 from 7 p.m to 9 p.m. All daughters (kindergartners through 6th graders) are welcome with their dads or uncles or grandpas to spend an "Evening Under The Sea" as we dance to some great DJ music and enjoy refreshments and fun! Tickets are $15 per family by Dec. 1.

Click here to open more information that includes a registration form to complete and send into school with payment by Dec. 1. Or see foxmillpta.com/events/father-daughter-dance for more information. If you have any questions or would like to help with this event, e-mail Diane Swecker at  diane.swecker@yahoo.com

Dining for Dollars Update
In September and October, Fox Mill PTA made $365 from our Dining for Dollars programs at Glory Days Grill and Pei Wei Asian Diner. Pei Wei was particularly popular, and we will do it again in the spring. We thank our restaurant partners for their support, and we thank all the Fox Mill families who have participated in Dining for Dollars.

Dining for Dollars will be taking a vacation in November for Thanksgiving, but it will be back and well rested in December with a Vocelli Pizza Night on Tuesday, Dec. 13. We're also planning some fun dining nights for 2012, so stay tuned!
