Fox Prints              October 10

Happy Columbus Day!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We're off to a great school year with our Boosterthon Fundraiser! It's great to see the kids excited about helping the school and being involved in a fundraiser which supports their field trips, assemblies, GRACE Art, technology upgrades (computers and Smart Boards), teacher supplies and training, and numerous other activities. Fox Mill is one of a few schools that supplements field trips for families. The Boosterthon Fun Run program is focusing on Teamwork through an EPIC Adventure over two weeks. Thank you for all your support with Fox Mill's new fundraiser for the 2011-2012 year.

We are still looking for few good parents to help the PTA this year. We are still in need of a chair for the following programs: Grocery Store, FLEX, and School Pictures. We also are looking for co-chairs for Secret Shop, Reflections, Chess Team, and Library Book Fair. If you're interested or would like to learn more about these programs, please contact me at

Sincerely,
Lorraine Mietlicki
PTA President

Kids Helping Kids logo fall 2011

On Oct. 28, all 6th graders will participate in the Kids Helping Kids program. They will learn about the issue of hunger and will assemble 100 bags of food to be distributed to other FCPS students in need. To learn more about this program, see http://foxmillpta.com/programs/kids-helping-kids

All the food for the bags is donated by Fox Mill families. We encourage families with 6th grade students to sign up to donate specific items. The sign up sheet is available on Sign Up Genius at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/kids108. Also on the sign up form are spots for parents to volunteer on Oct. 28 to help the kids assemble the bags.

All students will participate in the program regardless of whether their families donate or volunteer. If you have any questions about Kids Helping Kids, please e-mail Amy Fujii at wooster92@yahoo.com.

Chess Club Registration
The Chess Club is now accepting registrations for 60 students in grades 2-6. If more than 60 students register, there will be a lottery to determine who can participate. The club meets the first and third Fridays from October to March from 3:20 to 4:10 p.m. The registration fee is $5. Parents of participants must volunteer to help at least once. Click here to open the registration form or see http://foxmillpta.com/programs/chess-club-team for more information. Questions? Send an e-mail to  pbohnenberger@yahoo.com.
Odyssey of the Mind Registration
It is time to register for the Odyssey of the Mind adventure that begins in November!

Odyssey of the Mind is an international program that provides an opportunity for kids to creatively solve problems as a team by thinking "out of the box."  Teams of up to seven students will be formed in early November, and all student registrations must be submitted by Oct. 31.  Each team chooses one of five competitive problems to solve, brainstorms ideas, works on design, and builds a complete project. The problems appeal to a wide range of interests: some are technical and others are artistic or performance-oriented. Teams will work under the guidance of an adult coach throughout the school year. On March 31, 2012, teams will present their solutions at the annual regional tournament.

Click here to open the Odyssey of the Mind flyer.  If you feel your child might benefit from Odyssey of the Mind and want to learn more, please come to the Odyssey of the Mind Information Session on Oct. 18 from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Fox Mill cafeteria. Click here to open the registration form to register your child for the Odyssey of the Mind 2011-2012 program.  There is a $25 registration fee for each student to participate in the program. For more information, see http://foxmillpta.com/programs/odyssey-of-the-mind.

The Odyssey of the Mind program relies on parent volunteers to coach students and to act as judges on tournament day.  Training and resources are available for those who are interested in participating in this highly rewarding experience. There is a lot of interest from students to participate in this fun and educational program, so please consider volunteering.  We cannot do it without your help and your child will thank you for doing it!  Training for coaches will be provided on Nov. 12 at Langston Hughes Middle School in Reston

If you have questions about Odyssey of the Mind, please contact Karthika Siva at karthikasiva@yahoo.com or Jennifer Wagner at jenjwagner@yahoo.com.

 Student-Parent Surveys Coming

Each year you are asked to complete the Student-Parent Survey (also referred to as the Federal Survey or Impact Aid Form).  The survey will arrive at your home via U. S. Mail at the end of this month.  Please complete all of the requested information and return the form to school as soon as possible, but no later than Nov. 4.

If for some reason your form has not made it back to school by Nov. 4, you can turn it in during our parent teacher conference days, Nov. 7 and 8.  A desk will be manned at the school entrance (between the hours of 7:45 a.m. and 4:15 p.m.) to accept the forms. At that time, if you arrive without your completed form, we will have another copy available for you and will request that you take a minute to complete it while you are here.

You will be able to complete your "assignment" in the short turnaround time by preparing ahead.  Your "homework" will be to research and gather the following information: COMPLETE work addresses (including street numbers and zip codes) and work phone numbers for both parents/guardians. And here's the best part about this early notice of the assignment's due date:  You can start your research now!

It is extremely important that we get a survey back from each and every student.  The school system receives much needed financial support from the government as a result of your cooperation in this project.   Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Annual Walk for the Homeless
