Na, K, Mg & Ca
The four electrolytes you lose in order from most to least important (although all are pretty essential when it comes to replenishing electrolytes lost when sweating):
- Sodium
- Potassium
- Magnesium
- Calcium
If you clicked on last month's "In the NEWS" link which directed you to Fluid's article: What is hydration and why should I care, you would have read that it is not uncommon for a person who exercises to lose 34 oz. of sweat per hour (and more if you are an athlete.) Your sweat isn't just water; it's also made up of the minerals listed above.
In order for your body to function properly, it's advised to consume beverages containing those electrolytes.
Here are a couple of suggestions:
nuun
(pronounced noon) is an electrolyte enhanced drink tab that you add to 16 oz of h2o. Portable and available in 11 unique flavors, including KONA COLA and strawberry lemonade.
Yum.
Vitalyte
5 flavors available; comes in larger canisters or portable individual packets. Has also been said to cure the common hangover. :P
Retailers such as R.E.I. carry the Vitalyte product.
Check out your local running store to purchase nuun or click on the links above to direct you to the company's website.

GREETINGS!
What is summer without the beach? We love the beach and are so fortunate to live in such close proximity to some of the most well-known beaches around the world. People travel from the other side of the globe just to visit beaches we can drive to within an hour!
One of our favorite beaches is 26th avenue; for one, you can have bonfires, and two, they allow dogs.
This beach is also great because it's mainly frequented by locals and is near a great strip of surf shops on 41st avenue.
This is how the pro's do it!
beach = bonfire = grilling = smores = happiness =)

Is your Metabolism Healthy? - Part II
Here is the first half of Part II, yes, it is that big. I hope you enjoy this semi-technical read. It is a fresh new look at what metabolism really is and also is a sneak peak inside my nutrition book "The Healthy Blood Diet" that will be coming out next year.
So what does a healthy metabolism look, feel, sound and smell like?
For starters...
Your breath should not stink nor your tongue have fur
Your energy is robust and your eyes have no blur
Your skin, nails and hair should glisten with flexible strength
Your sleep patterns reflect the perfect length
Your attitude is pleasant and absent of gloom
And your poop does not demolish the bathroom
Click here for the good stuff. I promise no more poetry.

Vital Statistics and Tests for Optimum Health
These are by far the most important health factors you can monitor and control, yes there are more if you look deep enough, but these are a great start and often all you will ever need. If you are not sure where you stand on one of them, please go find out. You will probably need to ask for "special" tests from your doctor because these are not all standard. In my experience though, it is much more useful to test them now, i.e. PREVENTATIVE, then wait until you have strange symptoms and then your doctor says,
"maybe we should check your hormones and adrenal function because you seem to have a lot of strange issues showing up lately."
Doctors Office
- Cholesterol (blood test)
- Blood sugar (BMP test)
- Complete blood count (blood test)
- Blood enzyme test
- Blood Pressure
- Adrenal Gland (cortisol - blood test)
- Thyroid (TSH, T3, T4 - blood test)
- Hormones (estrogen, testosterone, progesterone - blood test)

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
Ceviche
The dog days of summer are here and that means hot, muggy weather. Who wants to turn up their oven and bake a chicken?
The perfect meal which takes minimal time to prepare (15 minutes); Ceviche!
Ingredients: - 2 lbs firm, fresh red snapper (or other firm-fleshed white fish) cut into 1/2 inch pieces, completely deboned
- 1/2 cup fresh squeezed lime juice
- 1/2 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice
- 1/2 red onion, finely diced
- 1 cup fresh seeded tomatoes, chopped (optional)
- 1 serrano pepper, seeded and finely diced
- 2 teaspoons salt
- Dash of ground oregano
- Dash of hot sauce or light pinch of cayenne pepper
Directions: - In a non-reactive casserole dish, either Pyrex or ceramic, mix together the fish, onion, tomatoes, serrano pepper, salt, hot sauce or cayenne and oregano.
- Cover with lime and lemon juice.
- Let sit covered in the refrigerator for an hour, then stir, making sure more of the fish gets exposed to the lime and lemon juice.
- Let sit for several more hours, giving time for the flavors to blend.
*During the marinating process, the fish will change from grey and translucent to whiter in color and opaque.* Serve with chopped cilantro and slices of avocado with heated tortillas for ceviche tacos. Or enjoy with tortilla chips. |
