The Power of Thank You Victoria M. Bixel, President
Over the past year, we have all experienced remarkable
changes in the way we work, the things we say, how we feel and what we do. We
have also witnessed tremendous acts of compassion, personally meaningful giving
and increased volunteerism due to the impact of the economy on our daily lives.
Many of us have spent countless hours reading jobs reports,
watching the Dow fluctuate on a day by day - too often minute by minute - basis,
and hearing stories of communities rallying behind local food banks, homeless
shelters and social service organizations. There is no doubt in my mind - and
in the minds of many who I speak with that we've experienced a dramatic shift
in our thinking and doing. And today, while the winds are still blowing in
uncertain directions, it is critical to reflect on the two words that have
reentered our lives and are helping to boost the nonprofit sector once again.
Giving Thanks for their Service. . .
In Jersey City, NJ, resides The York Street Project, sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of
Peace. York Street is celebrating 20 years of assisting women and children in
breaking the cycle of poverty. The organization is now undertaking a campaign
to sustain its mission for another 20, 40 and 60 years. The Legacy Fund
campaign is designed to provide York Street with an endowed fund that will
offset the operating costs for the future. Due to strong leadership and
strategic thinking, York Street has realized $2 million towards its $3.5
million goal from 72 families! As our work began and continues with York Street, what
struck me the most was the donors' mentality in supporting the good works
conducted at York Street each day. Many donors expressed confidence in the
mission. And because of their commitment to peace, justice and the poor, we
found that the donors were thanking the Sisters and
the York Street staff for what they were doing in the community - while
handing over a pledge form and a check to the campaign!
At the Shakespeare
Theatre of New Jersey, the sense of culture and accomplishment is palpable.
When conducting a feasibility study, we were transfixed by many of the donors
who voiced their strong opinions about how this theater has opened their eyes
to artistic brilliance and the need for ongoing arts education in New Jersey.
Certainly, we've seen extraordinary cuts in arts funding at local, state and
federal levels. But many of the donors we spoke with emphasized the need to
continue on with these programs, as a means of education for the community at
large and at times, as an escape from the chaos of the world around us. Time
and again, we heard the donors express gratitude for what the
Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey brings to them as individuals and as a
community.
180 Turning Lives
Around, serving those impacted by domestic violence in Monmouth County, has
experienced tremendous growth and support throughout its years in existence.
Its multi-faceted programs are designed to fulfill its mission of ending
domestic violence and sexual abuse. 180 has served thousands, and thousands
more will benefit from its mission. When working with 180 in creating and
implementing a strategic development plan in partnership with the
organization's strong staff and Board, we developed a cultivation/stewardship initiative
that is now realizing new and larger gifts. A strategy through direct mail was
implemented to thank donors. Within two weeks, 180 received additional gifts
from those who received the mailing, some with long-term pledges. Under the
leadership of the organization's Executive Director, Development Director and
Board, 180's simple "thank you" letter was met with returned gratitude for the
organization's mission.
I would be remiss in not mentioning our recent partner, Paterson Catholic Regional High School. Under the direction of experienced administrators and a new Board of Trustees,
this school has become an example of meeting the needs of those who seek refuge
from the streets in an effort to pursue college and careers. We met a senior
student early on in our work who received a scholarship to the University of
Maryland. Though our conversation was brief, she undoubtedly had faith that
Paterson Catholic provided her with a well-rounded education that would allow
her a future of great successes and accomplishments in academics, athletics and
social aspirations. Her gratitude for the staff and teachers was evident and
she reminded us of why we've been hearing from Paterson Catholic alumni that
the school led them to where they are today. A culture of giving is being
created at the school, and the backdrop of each gift remains gratitude for the
mission.
