Design and Build a House Before Christmas!

OK, so the headline's a little misleading - a bit like some of the commercials on TV, advertising the latest gizmo you just can't live without - "and, if you call right now, you'll also receive...!"

Just for a little holiday architectural fun, check out the instructions and photographs of this gingerbread house recipe.  It's sure to be a great group activity with family and friends.

King Arthur Flour

And if you do create a gingerbread masterpiece, send us a digital photo and we'll publish it in the next issue of Design Matters.

Merry Christmas to all!  See you in 2011!!

The Joke's on Us!

OK, so how many of you read and re-read our last Design Matters newsletter trying to find something about an "Anniversary Celebration"?  Certainly the subject of the email would have led you to believe that something special was happening.  And just as certainly, the opening monologue about the bad economy and the dire straits many architects find themselves in was not meant to be celebratory!   Though as the opening poem would indicate, our curses often become blessings if we but respond with gratitude (yes, I know, much easier said than done!)

Well, what I meant to tell you, dear readers, is this:

November marked the One-Year Anniversary of publishing our newsletter.  We think that's worthy of celebrating, but then again we believe celebrations to be an essential part of life.  Large or small, accomplishments, achievements and awards are to be enthusiastically acknowledged and yes, celebrated!

Of course, November also marked another anniversary - 23 years ago, Chris first became a licensed architect!  For nearly a quarter century, Chris has been honing his skills, refining the art and science of design and architecture.  In the past 23 years, Chris has designed, along with his professional staff and some stellar interns, hundreds of thousands of square feet of buildings - new construction, additions and remodels, historic preservation and adaptive re-use of old structures.  Many, many, many millions of dollars of investments have resulted from many, many hours of discussion and discernment, and plenty of attention to detail. All the workings of the architect's mind, and those of the staff, clients and the builders with whom we've worked over the years, evolve into lines and letters, calculations and code evaluations, printed on 24 x 36 paper in preparation for the reality of construction.  It's amazing, really, to think of the process that brings your dreams to reality via the talents and dedication of the architect.  That's most definitely something to celebrate!

Have Yourself a Merry Green Christmas!

If you're anything like me, you're probably still working on last-minute Christmas decorating, finding that "perfect" gift, or perhaps some fun stocking stuffers.  If you're like the architect in the family, you're just now getting 'round to thinking about Christmas gifts.  Whether you've completed your holiday trimming and shopping or still have a bit to do, here's some ideas for making your holidays and your holiday gift-giving a little "greener".

Consider the Tree.  Our family's tradition has long been the great Christmas Tree hunt - traveling to a local tree farm to choose and cut just the right tree for our living room.  The definition of "right" has varied considerably over the years!

Many folks swear by the ease and cost-effectiveness of artificial trees.  But which option is really green?  Go here for one opinion: Earth 911

Fill The Stocking.  If you've ever spent time, energy and money running around trying to find cutesy things to put in your kids (or spouse's) stockings, you might reconsider those purchases and try to do the "green thing" this year.  Instead of buying and loading that stocking with cheap plastic toys or other items of dubious enjoyment, think about what else could go in that stocking that's good for the recipient and good for the environment.  How about flower seeds for your little gardener?  Home-made, locally-made soaps or candles?  Re-usable, self-storing grocery totes?  A cool re-useable water bottle?  How about some Fair Trade chocolate or coffee?  Or items that are either made from recycled materials or help others to be a little more green?  Ideas: Eco-Artware   and   Re-Use-It

Lose The Gift Wrap.  Most of us love the sight of beautifully wrapped gifts under a shining Christmas tree.  But we rarely think about the environmental impacts of all of that gift-wrapping.  Maybe this is the year for your family to break the shiny wrap habit?  How many ideas can you come up with for non-traditional, yet lovely, gift wrapping?  We were gifted last year with a bottle of wine wrapped in a simple tea towel - looked great and is useful all on its own.  How about brown paper bags hand-decorated with colorful stamped designs?  Fabric, newspaper, or recycled wrapping paper and greeting cards?  More ideas: GAIAM Life

About The Gift.  "Maybe Christmas," he thought, "doesn't come from a store. Maybe Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!"  (The Grinch).  'nuff said.  For more on gifting that doesn't require buying anything:  The Daily Green

And, yes, if Christmas is here that means the New Year is upon us.  The dawning of each new year gives us the opportunity to renew ourselves as is evidenced by the list of resolutions most of us make at this time of year.  This new year, why not try a bit of a "green" twist to some of the old favorite resolutions?  Some good ideas can be found here:  Earth 911

Last Call

Ah, the holidays.  It truly is the most wonderful time of the year.

It's a time of rushing about from holiday party to open house, from holiday pageants and performances to religious services.  The days are filled with anticipation, with gladness and with hope. It's like no other time of the year.  No matter your age, Christmas brings a sparkle to your eyes, a lilt to your voice, and maybe even a catch in your throat as you remember days of Christmas past and the loved ones no longer with us to celebrate.

We sing, we laugh, we toast, we feast, we love, we remember, we give, we receive.

As you tend to your holiday preparations, remember those whose holidays aren't so bright.  Give what you can this year to food pantries and other agencies that provide food, clothing and shelter to those in need.  Give of your time to serve folks who need your strong assistance.  Spend some time helping a neighbor, an elderly or ailing family member.  Unwrap a smile, a warm embrace, and share a song or greeting of good cheer.    Invite blessings and peace into your home.   Receive ever so much more.

May you enjoy the laughter of children, feel the love and joy of family and friends, delight in the bright sparkle of the holidays, and enjoy good health, good fortune and good humor in the New Year!

"God bless us, everyone!"  (Tiny Tim, A Christmas Carol)

All of us at christopher fye + associates wish you a Happy Hanukah, a  Merry Christmas, and a prosperous New Year!
