Project-Based Learning:

Applying School Work to the Real World

Buck Institute logoInnovative Schools has teamed up with the Buck Institute for Education to bring the Project Based Learning (PBL) instructional approach to Delaware. Join us on Monday, May 23rd at the Del Tech Terry Campus in Dover, for an Information Session to learn about best practices in PBL design, assessment and management. Learn how PBL can be used in the classroom to increase student motivation, aptitude and achievement. This is a free event and is expected to fill up quickly. Seats are limited. To register, click here.

What is Project- Based Learning?

PBL is an approach to learning and teaching that promotes deeper understanding of a subject through in-depth inquiry and hands-on experience. Students must investigate, reflect upon and solve complex classroom problems by applying them to real life situations. In PBL the teacher acts as a facilitator rather than a director, helping students meet the core concepts and principles of their curriculum head on. This approach cultivates a student's ability to collaborate, communicate and think critically - a skill set they will carry with them throughout their lives.

In addition, students are able to engage their community through PBL, exploring local issues and careers, working with mentors, and presenting their work outside of the classroom. Students have to think in original and creative ways to come up with the solutions to real world problems with more than one right answer.

What We Are Reading

Yong Zhao Book coverInnovative Schools' staff is currently reading Yong Zhao's, Catching Up or Leading the Way: American Education in the Age of Globalization. Zhao, currently Presidential Chair and Associate Dean for Global Education, College of Education at the University of Oregon, where he also serves as the director of the Center for Advanced Technology in Education, wrote this book based on his own experience as a student in China, juxtaposed against his experience as a parent of students in the United States. Zhao explains how the virtual world and the "death of distance" are transforming everyday life in regards to jobs, the economy, and education. His unique dual perspective has led him to the conclusion that American education is at a crossroads and needs to make changes in order to maintain leadership in the face of globalization. Zhao's suggestions to educators include new measures of achievement other than test scores, personalizing schools to better serve every student, and fully accepting and integrating technology.

 Yong Zhao

Anyone interested in preparing students to become competent and fruitful global citizens will appreciate Zhao's view of the types of knowledge and skills they will need. This book explains how schools can rise to meet both the challenges and opportunities that come with offering this new world preparedness.

Have you read this book?
