Lt. Gov. Carroll to lead Florida Trade Mission to 
South Africa

Jennifer Carroll will lead a Team Florida Trade Mission to South Africa from November 4-13 with visits to Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Jacksonville's Sister City Nelson Mandela Bay (Port Elizabeth).

The JSCA Happy Hour gatherings just keep getting better and better. Please join us again for another evening of networking and fellowship on Thursday, September 15, 2011 at 5:30 p.m. at Biscottis in Avondale.

Biscottis is offering wines at half price (at your own expense) and complimentary light hors d'oeuvres.
 
Jerry Marterer Speaks to a Group of Duval County Teachers

Jerry Marterer spoke before a crowd of Duval County teachers on August 17 with his speech called "Language, Customs and Manners-Observations of a Corporate Nomad." Marterer was invited to speak at the professional development event to emphasize

the importance of cultural knowledge in world language studies. The teachers found Marterer's speech to be very entertaining and the event was labeled as a huge success.  
Help Wanted!   

As some of you may already know, Sister Cities International (SCI) will hold its 56th annual conference in Jacksonville from July 11-14, 2012. JSCA has been asked to help SCI coordinate this event. We are currently looking for volunteers to offer additional help.

Florida Sister Cities Launches New Website 

The Florida Coordinator for Sister Cities, Chris Boehler, has created a website for all Florida chapters to access and share information: it is at

http://www.floridasistercities.org. 

 

Please visit this site and use it as a resource. You also can email the site webmaster to have your events posted there if you want other chapters around the state to know of your programming.

September 11 Peace Concert Peace Concert 2011
On September 11, nearly 500 people packed into the St. Johns Cathedral in downtown Jacksonville for the annual September 11 Peace Concert, organized by UNF and JSCA. Our Peace Concert is just one of 100 musical concerts planned worldwide each year on September 11 to advance a more peaceful and harmonious Earth. These concerts bring the community together, reaffirming hope for world peace and celebrating life and universal humanity. 

 

Team Bahia Blanca named JSCA World Cup Champions

Our inaugural JSCA Soccer Tournament held its Championship game July 31, a great match seeing Bahia Blanca defeat Curitiba 3-1 to be crowned Champions. (For photos, check out the photos posted on the JSCA website.)

 

The game culminated months of planning and work by Nancy Alvarez and a couple of key poeple from the Beaches Adult Soccer League (BASL). Nancy is to be congratulated - and thanked - for putting so much time and effort into the program on our behalf. BASL has already stated it would like to discuss holding this event again next year.

 

Congratulations Bahia Blanca and a very special thank you to all of those who particpated and volunteered their time!

Africa Gala Night Enjoys a Packed House 
The July 16 Africa Night Gala, hosted by the Nelson Mandela Bay committee, gave Jacksonville residents a glimpse of the South Africa culture with music and food. Guests enjoyed South African delicacies provided by Martha's Kitchen and music by Kenny Nightingale.

 

Proceeds from the event help support the committee's efforts to purchase a medical van and sanitation for public schools in South Africa as well as collaboartive educational and cultural exchanges between both cities.

JAXPORT and the San Juan Committee

Representatives from the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce based in San Juan will join officials from the San Juan government to present an overview of Puerto Rico business sectors and resources to help you do business there. Also, Jacksonville and federal U.S. trade representatives will discuss resources to help you explore the business side of Puerto Rico -- and you'll meet key contacts with the Jacksonville Sister Cities Association San Juan Committee.

Mayor of Dakar Meets With

Moussa Sy, Mayor of Dakar, Senegal met with Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown and Sen. Tony Hill of Mayor Brown's office during a recent visit to Jacksonville. Mayor Sy also visited with JSCA President Robert Peek and JAXPORT officials. Mayor Sy is looking to expand on cultural and business relationships between the people of Jacksonville and Dakar. 

 
A Celebration of Chinese Language
& Culture
