Our next sister city: San Juan, PR
After several years of planning, San Juan (Puerto Rico) will become Jacksonville's next Sister City.
On October 2, Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton and San Juan Mayor Jorge Santini will sign the twinning agreement in downtown Jacksonville. A lunch celebration will be held the same day at the Omni Hotel at 11:30 a.m.
In addition to its historic, educational and cultural offerings, San Juan is a major business partner with Jacksonville. Puerto Rico is Jacksonville's No. 1 trading partner, and Jacksonville's port ships more cargo to and from the Commonwealth than any other mainland port.
San Juan will become Jacksonville's eighth Sister City -- and the second added this year, after Curitiba (Brazil) twinned with Jacksonville in April.
For more information about the lunch celebration, visit http://prccnf.com or call the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce of Northeast Florida at (904) 291-3101. |

Masan Students Visit; Study English
In the first Masan City Summer English Language Program, 10 college students from our Sister City in Masan (South Korea) participated in three weeks (July 6-29) of intensive English language instruction at the University of North Florida. The group also enjoyed cultural field trips and activities. Outings included trips to the Jacksonville Zoo, St. Augustine and cheering on the Jacksonville Suns! The students also met Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton and toured city hall, and met with City Council member and JSCA liaison Stephen Joost.
The UNF-hosted program was organized by Kyungnam University for the city of Masan. Because of the importance of English language proficiency in Korea, much of the cost of the program was funded by the city of Masan. Kyungnam University is also a partner school with UNF and sends two to three students to study at UNF each year. Another study group of about 30 students is planned to come to Jacksonville in January 2010. For more information about this program, please email Dr. Tim Robinson at trobinso@unf.edu or call him at (904) 620-2657. |

Board starts new direction at annual retreat
About 15 Board members spent a recent Saturday evaluating the accomplishments of JSCA over the years and planning for the organization's future.
Led by new JSCA President Lad Daniels, the Board has some exciting ideas about the direction of JSCA to more fully involve members and provide opportunities for social, cultural and business interaction with our member cities. At the same time, JSCA - like most other nonprofits -- is searching for creative and nontraditional sources of funding.
Special thanks to Steve Manis for coordinating the venue and to Nancy Olson for coordinating the day.
A few photos of the event show (top left) Bahia Blanca Co-Chair Diane Trifiletti, Murmansk Chair Muriel Whelchel and (bottom) President Lad Daniels with China Co-Chair Diane Yao and Elinore Fresh -- all discussing plans for their respective cities. |
JSCA to collect stories for a living history
JSCA is looking to document all its many achievements since our inception in 1967. The goal is to produce a comprehensive list of our major accomplishments, which we will share with the Jacksonville community to engender a deeper appreciation for the value of JSCA to our city.
The most vital part of this history will be our many success stories, captured directly from JSCA members past and present who have led these efforts. Stay tuned for more details about this exciting project. Meanwhile, if you have suggestions of anyone with a rich history at JSCA who would be good to interview, please contact Nancy Olson at phone (904) 630-1059 or email NOLSON@coj.net. |
