JSCA Elects New Board Officers
JSCA recently elected new Board officers, and our President is now Lad Daniels (left), President of the First Coast Manufacturers Association and a former President of the Jacksonville City Council. Lad is jumping in with both feet, as he will represent JSCA at the Sister Cities International Conference this summer in Belfast, Northern Island -- the first time this conference has been held outside the United States.
JSCA's Executive Vice President is now Robert Peek, Director of Marketing Development for the Jacksonville Port Authority. Treasurer is Steve Manis, Consulting Engineer for Connelly & Wicker Inc. Secretary is Tina Daniels, Adjunct Professor in the Dental programs at FCCJ North Campus. Comptroller is Karen Jessee, Senior Librarian for Jacksonville Public Library.
Congratulations to all new Board officers. |
Grants aimed at fighting African poverty
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is making $7.5 million available to local Sister City chapters around the country to fund projects aimed at alleviating poverty in Africa.
Grant applications must be submitted online by July 10, 2009. The Foundation is looking to fund projects focused on water, health and sanitation issues, specifically those in African cities with a population of between 100,000 to 3.5 million people and located near a large body of water. Between five to seven cities are expectd to be chosen in the first round of grants. JSCA's Port Elizabeth Committee is looking into this wonderful opportunity. |
JSCA Shines at World of Nations
Herrald Jonkers and Natalie Halpern share a laugh at the recent World of Nations Celebration at Metro Park.
A special thanks is extended to all JSCA members and their guests who volunteered to staff the JSCA booth for the event.
JSCA regularly participates in community events to share our mission with the Northeast Florida community and encourage new members to join.

African Freedom Day Celebrated at Jacksonville Beach
About 30 friends and members of the PE Committee celebrated African Freedom day with a June picnic. Pictured (left to right) are Geraldine Green, Judith Hankins, Pam and Luther Quarles, Deborah K. Thompson (Chair) Martha Davis and Brenda Frinks (kneeling in front).
In addition to great food and fellowship, the group enjoyed a short program by Judith Hankins, who gave a chronological outline of several countries and the dates they received their independence.
Next on tap for the PE Committee: the annual African Nights celebration in August. Stay tuned for details on date and location. |
