Don't run red

This is one of the several red-light cameras that have been installed at the intersection of 60th Avenue and Highway 85.

If you've noticed the cameras at 60th Avenue and Highway 85, they're not part of Allen Funt's Candid Camera television show, however, if you're not careful, they will take your picture.

Starting later this summer, drivers who

run a red light at the intersection of Highway 85 and 60th Avenue could have their photo taken, as well as pictures of their license plates. And if that happens, most likely, you will receive a citation as well.

In an effort to lower the number of red-light runners and increase safety, the city has installed red-light cameras at East 60th Avenue and Highway 85. The red-light cameras will be used to enforce traffic laws, increase safety and improve driving habits.

"This project is all about increasing safety at 60th and 85, which is a very busy intersection," Sgt. Wayne Granger of the Commerce City Police Department said. "The city wants to make drivers more aware of the dangers involved in running a red light. Accidents started by drivers running a red light can be avoided, and that's what we're after."

Installation of the cameras and sensors were completed in May.

City Council offering incentives

The Commerce City Council has approved a business incentive package to encourage business to do business with the city.

The Business Advancement Taskforce, made up of business owners, residents and city staff, put together the incentive package, which was approved by council at its May 17 meeting. The taskforce  presented a number of short- and longer-term recommendations to City Council that are designed to spur business and development growth in 2010 and beyond.

The short-term incentive package recommendation includes numerous sales/use tax rebates and building fee waivers for both new and existing businesses.

The city is also temporarily waiving 50 percent of the building fees associated with residential home improvements.

Retailers, developers
expressing cautious optimism

Growing or planning to grow was the message from retailers at this year's International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) Retail Real Estate Convention (RECon), held last month.

Representing Commerce City at the convention were Council Member Dominick Moreno, Deputy City Manager Tom Acre, Economic Development Director Brittany Morris and Economic Development Specialist Michelle Hill.
