Hear your story during the Wild game |
Beyond the Yellow Ribbon has partnered with the Minnesota Wild to find stories of inspiration on ice to share on Hockey Day Minnesota.
If you know of a Servicemember or military family who has shown leadership in their community through their passion for hockey, nominate them to be honored in a special feature for Hockey Day Minnesota. Their inspirational story will be continued to be shared throughout the year by the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Program.
Last year 10 year-old Reid Blake inspired thousands of hockey fans in the FSN produced piece, "Hockey Survives Cancer" with the story of how he overcame a major bone cancer surgery to skate again. This year we're looking for similar inspiration for military families as they prepared for a year- long deployment.
The Fifth Annual Hockey Day Minnesota includes a full day of hockey programming, including telecasts of hockey games taking place across the state on Saturday, February 12, 2011.
Nominations will be accepted on our website between Nov. 25th and Dec. 15th. for more information call 651-681-3825.
New FAC in Southeast Minnesota |
The Rochester Family Assistance Center (FAC) opened earlier this month. The office, located at the Rochester Training and Community Center at 1715 Marion Road, Southeast in Rochester will be staffed Thursdays from 10 a.m. - 3p.m.
Family programs established that there was a need to expand our Family Assistance centers in Southeast Minnesota, with Rochester selected as the best fit for the new office. The FAC will start off as a part-time office with the potential to grow into a full-time office, should the need arise. All calls to the new Rochester offices will be able to speak to a Family Assistance Center Specialist 24 hours a day, as the phones will be rolled to one of our full-time staff when the office is closed.
The FAC staff provides information and referrals to local resources as well as state and federal military support programs. FAC support staff are trained professionals that understand the challenges associated with the military lifestyle. When challenges occur, you need timely and accurate information, compassion and reliable support. No matter what challenges arise, the military family can be assured that the Family Assistance Center will help with solutions.
There now 11 FACs in Minnesota. When you include the Air Guard and Reserve assistance offices there are 14 offices state wide to assist military families.
The number of FACs in Minnesota rises again.
Parents Needed |
|
Now is your chance to help design a program for military parents. The University of Minnesota, together with IRIS Educational Media, is designing a new parenting program for National Guard and Reserve families to assist in reintegration efforts following deployment. And they want input from you.
Parents who have been through a deployment, and have children between ages five and 12 years old are asked to be part of an upcoming Focus Group. The Department of Family Social Science and UMN understand that in order to create a structure that best meets the needs of the National Guard and Reserve families, they need to hear from some that have been through it.
Focus Groups will be held at the University of Minnesota from 6:00-9:00 p.m. on Nov. 29 and 30. Each parent participant will receive a small "thank you" gift card of $30 for joining (up to two per family).
The new parent program is scheduled to start in March, and will include in-person groups and online components to support family members.
Call Laurel at 612-626-8135 for more information. Enrollment is limited.

Freedom Award |
|
Have you got a supportive employer?
Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense agency, announces the opening of the nomination season for the 2011 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. Guard and Reserve members, and their families, are encouraged to nominate employers who have provided exceptional support of their military employees above federal law requirements.
Nominations are being accepted at www.FreedomAward.mil through January 17, 2011. The Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award is the highest recognition given by the U.S. Government to employers for the outstanding support of their employees serving in the Guard and Reserve.
The 2011 recipients will be announced in the spring and honored in Washington, D.C. at the 16th annual Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award ceremony on September 22, 2011.
The 2010 recipients included CEOs from seven large American corporations, a governor, a mayor, a state police director, the chancellor of a university, and four small business owners. These and past recipients of the Freedom Award provide an outstanding range of support to these shared employees, including maintaining their full salary, continuation of benefits, providing care packages and family assistance to employees fulfilling their military obligation.
Make a Difference
The Perfect Gift in Passing
In a tribute to honor individuals that have donated life while inspiring others to do the same, the 2011 Donate Life Rose Parade float will feature a Minnesota native that bravely served his country before and after the end of his short life.
On his third overseas deployment with the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Corporal Ben Kopp sustained a bullet wound to his leg while saving six of his fellow Rangers during a firefight with enemy forces. Doctors were able to surgically repair his leg, but the amount of blood lost was too much for his body to cope with. Ben, 21, died at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., eight days after being wounded.
But his legacy would live on. As an organ donor, Ben provided his heart, liver and kidneys to two individuals in need after his own time had ended. Inspired by his uncle, J.T. Burud, an organ donor who died years before Ben was born, Ben's heart still beats in the chest of Illinois resident Judy Miekle.
Having donated in 2009, Ben will be honored on the Donate Life's float during the Rose Bowl Parade on Saturday, Jan. 1 in Pasadena, California.
Last year's honored donator was also from Minnesota, 1 year-old Jack Van Hecke. His Mom, Jennifer and step-dad 1st Lt. Eric Van Hecke, a PA in the Minnesota Army National Guard, attended the parade last year.
About the experience for family members, Jennifer said that it is "an incredible experience, going to the Rose Bowl and decorating the float and florograph. Very emotional. However, an exciting way to pay a tribute to our children no longer physically with us."

A seat for the deployed |
The main lobby of the Marshall Performing Arts Center had a new look during the run of "South Pacific," at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. Veteran organizations lined the hall ready to share information with theatre patrons.
Each of the October performances was dedicated to a local unit, with four free tickets given out each night to members of that unit. During each performance, one seat was left purposefully open to represent the men and women currently serving overseas - and the wish for them to come home safely to "fill the seat."
Servicemembers that attended the event were excited to be recognized, and the service organizations had a great response from attendees seeking information. The event was a success for local organizations working to help veterans and for those veterans who were exposed to helpful programs and good theater.
Additional tables displayed were a lesson in history, covering every major conflict that Northland military personnel have been involved in since World War II.
