Saints players volunteer at camp for military children
Saints player instructs children on batting
Thursday the St. Paul Saints volunteered with Minnesota military youth at a one-of-a-kind camp for 8-15 year-old military children of deployed, deploying, or recently deployed Servicemembers of all reserve components.

The Saints players set up a clinic for the children and taught them basic baseball skills like batting, throwing and catching.
Derek Sharrer, Executive Vice-President and General Manager of the St. Paul Saints said the players were happy to volunteer.

"The children at this camp are heroes in their own right, having made many personal sacrifices with one or more family members serving in our nation's military.  Our players and our staff see it as the very least that we can do to provide them with an opportunity to relax, play a game, and have a few laughs with us," said Sharrer.

In addition to the Saints visit, the week-long camp provided the children deployment cycle support, YMCA adventures and wilderness experience.
New Family Assistance Center

FAC Opening
In April, the Becker County Commission passed a resolution which allowed a new Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Family Assistance Center (FAC) to open across the hall from the existing Veterans Service Office in the county courthouse.
This is the first time in Minnesota, and possibly the nation, that a FAC has been located in the same building as a County Veterans Service Office.

"The CVSOs and the Family Assistance Centers work closely together throughout the state of Minnesota," said Mike Farren, Supervisor, Minnesota Family Assistance Centers.

Farren says that many times a returning service member will need to connect and work with both offices to get the assistance they need. Sometimes they are sent back and forth between offices, which in most cases means driving several miles for service.

Being closely located will allow the two offices to work together in order to provide the best service and create a one-stop shop for Minnesota military families, service members and Veterans.

The opportunity for this partnership was the idea of Becker County Veterans Service Officer, Lauri Brooke.

Due to increasing numbers of service members, Becker County had been looking to add a FAC in the area. Brooke knew there was available office space and recognized the opportunity at hand. She proposed that the center be located in an office across the hall. The new office would bring more Veterans and military families into the courthouse, exposing them to all the services the county has to offer.

In the future both the FAC and the CVSO office plan to take advantage of their close proximity and hold duel outreach events and other initiatives.
Lt. Col. Barbara O'Reilly, Chief of the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon program, supports this goal.  She feels that the similar missions of the FAC and the CVSOs create a natural opportunity to work together - maximizing existing resources.

"This is a partnership that will allow us to provide better service and resources to our Veterans and our families," said Lt. Col. O'Reilly.
The Minnesota Beyond the Yellow Ribbon program is planning to duplicate this model in other counties across the state.
New staff members at DCS look to continue the success
Kirsten Fisher
Kirsten
Last month Kirsten Fisher and Patti Bitney Starke joined the Deployment Cycle Support (DCS) team.

Fisher works in the family programs office supporting military families, and Bitney Starke works as a medical transition coordinator guiding Soldiers and their families through medical issues.

Both ladies look to use their previous experience and backgrounds to excel at their positions.

Fisher, whose father served in the Navy, comes to DCS Family Programs with a background in working with children. She said that she looks to draw upon both of those experiences to help the DCS Family Programs grow and is excited to be working with military families, "I like helping ease the Servicemembers minds about their kids, knowing they are in good hands and being heard."
Patti Bitney Starke
Patti
Bitney Starke is also aware of the unique needs of a military family member as her father served as an officer in the Army and her husband served in the Marine Corps. That experience, coupled with her work experience in advocacy and development, she feels make her a great fit for her position at DCS.

"It is an honor and privilege to work side by side with people who are committed to the mission and important work of DCS," said Bitney Starke.

The DCS team is also honored to have Fisher and Bitney Starke onboard and looks forward to the assistance they can provide Servicemembers and their families.
Military Family Life Consultant available at Camp Ripley all summer
For those Servicemembers spending time at Camp Ripley this summer, meeting with a Military Family Life Consultant (MFLC) just got a whole lot easier. An MFLC is coming to Camp Ripley and will be available from June 1-August 31.

An MFLC is a Masters or Ph.D. level Licensed Clinical Counselor who augments existing military services and works with families, individuals', couples, and children to provide non-medical counseling services. This Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Counselor offers short term, solution focused counseling, education, and referral.

In order to schedule an appointment, Servicemembers or a member of their family can stop by the SRP building or call Sherrie Conran between 8:00 A.M. and 10:00 P.M. at (320) 360-0266.
