Must See in the Museum

John Constable: Study of Cirrus Clouds
Study of Cirrus Clouds, about 1821-22
on view in John Constable: Oil Sketches from the Victoria and Albert Museum through June 10

John Constable, one of England's most celebrated landscape painters, completed more than two hundred sky studies in oil. A keen observer of cloud formations, he was acutely aware of the scientific discoveries of his time, owning and annotating a copy of Thomas Forster's book Researches about Atmospheric Phaenomena (1815). The book included a synopsis of the first attempts to explain and classify cloud formations--giving them the same Latin names that we use today.

John Constable: Oil Sketches from the Victoria and Albert Museum has been organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The exhibition at Princeton has been made possible by an anonymous benefactor, and by Christopher E. Olofson, Class of 1992, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Support was also provided by Duane E. Wilder, Class of 1951, John H. Rassweiler, the Allen R. Adler, Class of 1967, Exhibitions Fund, and the Partners and Friends of the Princeton University Art Museum. This exhibition is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.

Concert

John Constable: Branch Hill Pond, Hampstead Heath, 1828
"Constable & Landscape," Richardson Chamber Players
Sunday, May 6, 3 p.m.
Richardson Auditorium, Princeton University

John Constable's landscapes are so evocative that one critic wrote of them, "the atmosphere possesses a characteristic humidity about it that almost imparts the wish for an umbrella." Umbrellas may not be necessary, but the concert will suggest musical parallels with the work of this master painter.

Offered in partnership with Princeton University Concerts and hosted by Museum Director James Steward, "Constable & Landscape" will feature works by Debussy, Beethoven, Britten, and Schumann.
