Must See in the Museum

George Washington at the Battle of Princeton, 1783, in a British royal trophy frame, about 1760
Mary Ellen Bowen Gallery of American Art

While frames often aesthetically complement the paintings they accompany, it is rare that a frame should add historical and conceptual meaning to a work. The elaborate frame surrounding Charles Willson Peale's masterpiece originally came to Princeton from England on a portrait of King George II--the British monarch who ruled at the time of the College of New Jersey's founding in 1746. That painting was destroyed during the Battle of Princeton in 1777. In a richly symbolic act of Revolutionary recycling, the frame was reused--minus the carved crown that once surmounted it--on Peale's portrait of the "other" George, who had in fact led the battle that destroyed the first painting.

The current issue of the Record, the Museum's annual scholarly journal, is the first to be devoted to American art. Read more about the frame's history and recent conservation treatment, along with other articles about American art at the Museum. Available in the Museum Store. $18.00; Friends member $16.20.
