Happy Holidays from the Art Museum!

December 21, 2011

Object of Devotion installation At this time of year our thoughts turn to things that enrich and sustain our lives--the love of friends and family, the comforts of home, and the art and culture that feed our souls. What better way to share time with those dearest to you than by enjoying the world of culture at your doorstep at the Princeton University Art Museum. With a host of special exhibitions, including Object of Devotion: Medieval English Alabaster Sculpture from the Victoria and Albert Museum, scavenger hunts and other activities for the young (and the young at heart), and a Museum Store full of unique, artisanal works, be sure to make a visit to the Museum a centerpiece of your holidays.

Must See in the Museum

Saint Cecilia (detail)One of the highlights of the Museum's galleries of nineteenth-century European art is a stained glass window designed by the Pre-Raphaelite painter Sir Edward Burne-Jones for the firm Morris & Co. The window depicts St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music, and is a masterpiece of the English Arts and Crafts movement. The window may have originated as a private commission, perhaps for a dining room, an entertainment space for which the musical motif would have been well suited.

Group of Prophets A Group of Prophets
Through February 12, 2012

Saint John the Baptist, his beard and locks curled and gilded, stands at the bottom right of this alabaster panel showing prophets who foretold the coming of Christ. The other prophets bear no identifying emblems or symbols, with the exception of the figure at top right, who is probably Moses. This panel likely formed part of a Te Deum altarpiece, so-called after the Early Christian hymn "Te Deum Laudamus" ("we praise thee, Lord").
