New Exhibition

The Assumption of the Virgin The highlight of the Museum's winter exhibition season opens on Saturday, December 3. Featuring 60 exceptional sculptures from the finest collection of its kind, Object of Devotion: Medieval English Alabaster Sculpture from the Victoria and Albert Museum examines the most important scenes and saints, offering insights into the spiritual lives, hopes, fears, and religious aspirations of medieval Christians. The exhibition also considers the commerce in these works and their role in European trade, as well as their place both in the home and in chapels and cathedrals.

Yoga in the galleries Slow Down with Yoga and Meditation

For thousands of years, yoga and meditation have been tools to quiet the mind, bring transformation, and achieve wisdom--not unlike the benefits of discovering great works of art. Join Princeton's YogaAbove instructor Michael Cremone for an exploration of the healing benefits of yoga, combining a lecture with yoga and meditation practices that you can take home. Bring your own mat or borrow one for the evening. Refreshments in the Museum will follow. Free and open to the public.

Searching for Demons in Mount Guankou (Guankou sou shan tu) Tethered Tiger, Captured Dragon: Clearing Out Demons from Mountain Woods

Carma Hinton, documentary filmmaker and Clarence J. Robinson Professor of Visual Culture and Chinese Studies at George Mason University, will lecture on "Searching for Demons on Mount Guankou," a theme explored in two paintings (one from the 13th and the other from the late 15th-early 16th century) currently on view in the exhibition Immortals, Deities, and Sages in Chinese Painting. The lecture is organized by the P. Y. and Kinmay W. Tang Center for East Asian Art and sponsored by the Program in East Asian Studies, the Department of Religion, and the Princeton University Art Museum.

Acclaimed Swiss artist Thomas Hirschhorn, one of the most exciting artists working today, comes to Princeton in December as the Art Museum's 2011-2012 Sarah Lee Elson, Class of 1984, International Artist in Residence. Hirschhorn's presentation will be followed by a response from Hal Foster, Townsend Martin, Class of 1917, Professor of Art & Archaeology at Princeton. The lecture is cosponsored by the International Sculpture Center and the University's Department of Art & Archaeology. A reception will follow in the Art Museum.
