Captured with an eye for antiquity, topography, and social life, the works cast a compelling light on a great world capital in the age of the Grand Tour.

When Men and Mountains Meet: China as Land and People
Opening March 5
What is the relationship between land and people, and how has it changed throughout the ages? Painting, printmaking, and photography capture our changing relationship to both culture and nature, specifically mountains. In early-twentieth-century China, during an era of turmoil, man's traditional balance with land and culture was likened to a verse by the English poet William Blake: "Great things are done when Men and Mountains meet/ This is not done by Jostling in the Street." This concept is the crux of this compelling exhibition.
