A New Look for the Nineteenth-Century Galleries
Sir Edward Burne-JonesThe Museum's nineteenth-century galleries--home to beloved masterpieces by artists including Monet, Van Gogh, and Cézanne--are getting a new look, such as a new selection of artworks featuring photographs, prints, and drawings from the period, and enhanced didactic materials providing rich contextual insights.

The galleries are currently closed for this work, but will reopen August 28, with all work completed by September 4. In the meantime, watch a short video featuring Caroline Harris, curator of education and academic programming, to learn more about the project.
Upcoming Exhibition
Gauguin's Paradise Remembered: The Noa Noa Prints
September 25, 2010 - January 2, 2011

Paul GauguinAmong the exhibitions that anchor the Museum's fall season is this groundbreaking look at the printmaking of Paul Gauguin (1848-1903). The ten woodcuts Gauguin produced in Paris in 1893-94 to illustrate his book Noa Noa (Fragrance) recount his experiences from his first Tahitian voyage and paraphrase major themes from Gauguin's Tahitian paintings, reproducing the symbolic spirit of his Polynesian paradise in dark and brooding images.

The exhibition will only be seen in Princeton, so be sure this fascinating and intimate exhibition is part of your fall!

Must See in the Museum
Mixteca-Puebla effigy vesselThe flat, almost cartoonlike conventions of Mixteca-Puebla manuscript painting come to life in three dimensions on this important effigy vessel. With minimal application of modeled forms--head, wing feathers, and tail--a plump raptor emerges from a simple tripod vessel. The artist has taken great care to render distinct plumage types, with long, pointed wing tips, variegated breast feathers, and u-shaped motifs referring to down.

This vessel is one of the many treasures to be discovered in the Galleries of the Ancient Americas on the Museum's lower level.
Late Thursdays
2009 Nassau Street SamplerThanks to you and many friends from on and off campus, our summer programming has been a great success. Hundreds joined us for our first-ever outdoor film series, and over 700 guests participated in the July celebration of our summer exhibitions.

We're taking a short break in events until the new academic year commences (though the galleries will remain open on Thursday evenings until 10 p.m.), but mark your calendars now for the second annual Nassau Street Sampler on Thursday, September 16. Last year's kick-off event brought record numbers to the Museum, so plan on coming early to enjoy free nibbles and sips of the very best that Nassau Street (and beyond) has to offer, along with live performances, t-shirt giveaways, and more! Meanwhile, visit our Facebook photo album from the 2009 Nassau Street Sampler.

We're partial to orange, of course, but he and a little brother, the mini magnet man, come in a range of colors. Or, get the rubber luggage tag magnet man for $12.95, to help you identify your bag quickly among the sea of black suitcases at the airport. One of a host of fun finds at the Museum Store this summer!
