Summer Interns
2010 PUAM summer internsOn August 13, the Art Museum will say goodbye to our wonderful summer 2010 interns. This paid, ten-week summer program provides an introduction to art museum careers for undergraduate and graduate students through departmental assignments, weekly discussions with Museum staff, and field trips to other arts institutions.

The program--made possible by the Hilla von Rebay Foundation and the Frelinghuysen Foundation--is very competitive, with 49 applicants from 21 schools for only eight spots this year. This fall, the Museum welcomes the first academic-year interns, thanks to a new endowment established by long-time benefactor Joseph McCrindle.

New Exhibition
Doug AitkenDoug Aitken: Migration (Empire)
August 28 through November 14, 2010
Art Museum Lawn

Doug Aitken's monumental video installation Migration (Empire) (2008) will be on view on the Museum's front lawn this fall, the first time an exhibition of video art has been presented outside the Museum. Migration (Empire) poignantly reflects on the experience of migration, a subject steeped in American history, as well as on challenges to the natural environment. Projected onto a custom-designed billboard, calling to mind the highways that gave birth to the motel (a setting for many of the scenes in this extraordinary work of art), the video will be on view from dusk to 11:00 p.m. every evening.

Community Connections
Princeton University Preparatory ProgramThe Princeton University Preparatory Program (PUPP) is a summer institute for high-achieving, low-income high school students run by Princeton's Teacher Preparation Program. The Art Museum has once again partnered with PUPP to develop a studio art curriculum, taught by Maria Evans from the Arts Council of Princeton.

Much of this summer's curriculum has focused on Chinese art, paralleling the students' work in other courses; they began with a tour of the Museum's Asian art collection, exploring tomb guardians and brush painting, and tried their hands at this beautiful art form themselves. Other classes have focused on studio practice, with students creating their own original still-lifes in the tradition of iconic artists in the Museum's galleries like Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne. This innovative program wraps up with closing ceremonies on August 5.
