Live at the Museum: Miracles of Modern Science

"Some of the most creative, catchy, and purely fun music in New York City."
--Jezebelmusic.com, May Feature 2009

Five Princeton alums, known as Miracles of Modern Science, will perform live at the Princeton University Art Museum on Thursday, November 5, from 8 to 9:30 p.m. The Brooklyn-based band, which Spin Magazine named as one of 2009s "25 Must-Hear Artists," combines post-rock explosions, anthemic pop vocals, and antique textures to create a sound all its own. Evocative of music lost in time, this is how a Civil War string band might have imagined the twenty-first century. Enjoy the effortless weave of harmonies and instrumentation as you take in the Museum's vast array of visual treasures.

Chinese Tomb Guardians

On the occasion of Halloween, what better works of art to highlight than two fearsome tomb guardians from the the Museum's Asian art holdings. These Chinese tomb guardians from the Tang dynasty (618-907) are shown subduing animal-demons underfoot. Relics from one of the golden eras of Chinese art and culture, the fierce figures served as sentinels capable of protecting the deceased from evil spirits. Discover these and many more treasures of Asian art on the Museum's lower level.

New on View
Polly Apfelbaum
Bubbles

A new acquisition, an important work by New Jersey-based artist Polly Apfelbaum, has recently gone on view for a limited time in the Museum's Marquand Mather Court gallery. Placed prominently on the gallery floor, Bubbles comprises hundreds of diamond-shaped pieces of synthetic velvet assembled in the form of a circle. The work takes its name from one of the Powerpuff Girls, a group of cartoon superheros who manage to be cute and powerful all at once; their fusion between "sweetness" and "strength" is a fragile one, says the artist. "There is something just a little perilous about the combination as everything works just on the edge of chaos."
