Alaska Comes to Princeton

In celebration of the opening of the major exhibition Gifts from the Ancestors: Ancient Ivories of Bering Strait, the Museum welcomes thirty-five Alaskan Natives to Princeton this week, including contemporary artists, performers, scholars, and representatives from indigenous communities, to participate in the opening weekend events. Please join us as we explore the varied cultures of Alaska's Native peoples.

Gifts from the Ancestors opens this Saturday
 
This groundbreaking exhibition looks at the ancient art of the Arctic hunters who populated what are now the Russian and U.S. sides of the Bering Strait region. Their extraordinary but little known artistic achievement is explored in the exhibition and a series of opening events:
 
Symposium: Ancient Lifeways, Current Concerns
Saturday, October 3, 1 to 4:30 p.m.

This symposium brings together cultural property policy and ethics experts to explore the complex issues surrounding cultural heritage and patrimony as it relates to the excavation, sale, and display of ancient ivories from Bering Strait. The panel will also discuss climate change and its environmental and social impact in the Bering Strait region.

Gifts from the Ancestors: Ancient Ivories of Bering Strait
Saturday, October 3, 5 p.m. 

GFADon't miss the opening lecture and reception  for Gifts from the Ancestors: Ancient Ivories of Bering Strait on Saturday, October 3, beginning at 5 p.m. William W. Fitzhugh, director of the Arctic Studies Center at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History, will offer an in-depth discussion of the exhibition, followed by a reception in the Art Museum.

Family Day: A Celebration of Alaskan Native Culture
Sunday, October 4, 12 to 4 p.m. 
 
GFA3In partnership with the Arts Council of Princeton, the Alaska Native Arts Foundation, and the Princeton Public Library, the Art Museum presents Family Day: A Celebration of Alaskan Native Culture, at the Albert Hinds Plaza, adjacent to the Princeton Public Library. Family Day celebrates Alaskan Native heritage with more than twenty-five artists, athletes, storytellers, and performers demonstrating traditional crafts, games, music, and dance. In addition to the wide range of performances and demonstrations held throughout the day, families will be able to participate in art activities highlighting Alaskan Native culture with the award-winning staff of the Alaska Native Heritage Center.

This fall the Museum Store celebrates the extraordinary heritage of Alaskan Native artists through an array of merchandise including a collection of handmade artisanal jewelry and unique decorative objects from Alaska's Bering Strait region. The Museum Store is stocked with the Museum's latest publication, the groundbreaking Gifts from the Ancestors, and a postcard book, Enduring Spirit: Arctic Art at Princeton, highlighting the Museum's collection of ancient art from western Alaska.
