Welcome to Pasadena Public Library
Greetings!
Dear Reader:
WOW!
"Wow" is the only word that could describe the flurry of activities that occurred at the library from the end of September with more through the beginning of October. Here are some of them:
- The official announcement that the Fairmont Library is returning to full-time operations starting October 15th.
- The 24/7 Wi-Fi Zone on the East veranda of the library opened with a small ceremony attended by city officials including Mayor Johnny Isbell who spoke to the group assembled on Sept. 12th.
- The Annual Meeting of the Friends of the Library was on Sept. 27 with the election of officers for the coming year and many new activities for the Friends in the works.
- October 13th is the Friends second book sale of the year - bigger and better than the previous one, we're spreading out into the café of the Central Library - a not to be missed event.
- The Community Survey was launched to find out what you would like from your library.
- Children's Story Time on Monday and Friday at 10:30 a.m. and Pajama story time at 6:30 pm on the 2nd Tuesday of each month have resumed. Bring your children or grandchildren to the Central library to hear one of these lovely programs for the little ones.
Fairmont Opens Full Time
I am so pleased to tell you that the staff has worked hard to bring Fairmont to fulltime service a reality. The new hours will begin on October 15th and there will be a reception at Fairmont Library at 4 p.m. to celebrate the return of full time hours. Kenya Johnson and her staff are looking forward to seeing you at the Fairmont reception. We've given the entrance a brighter color and the same reliable staff will still be there along with some new faces to help you find those library treasures.
The new Fairmont hours will be:
Monday & Wednesday - 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Tuesday, Thursday & Friday - 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Saturday - 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Sunday Closed
I hope to see you at Fairmont on the 15th.
The Coming Community Survey
Nothing is more important to the director of a library than providing great service to all the members of the community, including all age groups and ethnic communities. How do we know what kind of services the community wants from its library? There are many differing ideas of what a library should be so sometimes that's difficult to know. A library director brings past experience in from other libraries and can apply that experience to his or her present community.
Often that previous knowledgewill meet the needs and expectations of the library - but the best way to determine what a library should be like, and what services it should provide, is to listen to the people of the community. What is it that will make their library responsive to their needs? What kinds of books do they like to read? What audio visual materials (movies and CDs) do people want? What hours suit their needs? What kinds of programs would they like to see?
In order to get the answers that reflect the interests of all of the citizens of Pasadena, the library will be conducting a very sophisticated survey. We've hired an outside consultant to conduct an anonymous survey on behalf of the library. A truly representative sample of the community has been selected to participate in the survey from a randomized list of all members of the community. Those who have been selected will receive a post card announcing their selection early in October. The survey will be available in both English and Spanish, and delivered to the participants' home along with an incentive item of appreciation to thank those who complete the survey for their time and work. When the survey is returned to the library in a sealed postage pre-paid envelope, the consultant will tabulate the results. This report will be a driving factor in setting the goals for the library for the next few years. It will tell us what you want - we will then figure out how to meet those goals given the realities of operating in tougher economic times.
I look forward to the results of the survey and to moving on to planning the future of your library.
I also look forward to meeting you at the Fairmont opening and the Friends book sale and hope you will stop by and introduce yourself. I am glad to hear your ideas about improving your library at any time.

Book Club Banter
"There are worse crimes than burning books. One of them is not reading them."
--Joseph Brodsky-
October brings us cooler weather (we hope!), football games, fall parties and plans of spooky Halloween fun. The biggest one of the many October activities at your Pasadena Public Library will be the Friends Fall Book Sale and Book Signing on Saturday, October 13from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the café area at the Central Library. There will be LOTS of children's books available for purchase this time, as well as videos, books on CD, great "how-tos," recent fiction, unique Library stationary, hand-made key-chains and even homemade baked goods. Local author "Joan Rylen" (the pen name of authors Johnell Kelley and Robbyn Hill) will be giving a short presentation and signing copies of their new book Getaway Girlz (a "red-hot" mystery with lots of humor) at the Book Sale starting at 11:30 a.m. and running until 1:00 p.m. Copies of Getaway Girlz can be purchased at the granite counter during the event. With 10% of the sales benefiting the Friends of the Library, plan to pick up at least one copy to put in your very own "treat" bag!
The Fairmont Branch Library's First Monday Book Club will be reading Unbroken: A World War II Story Of Survival, Resilience and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand (author of the best-selling book Seabiscuit), and will be meeting in the Conference Room at the Fairmont Library on Monday, October 1, at 6:00 p.m. Come and join in as the group follows the heroic true-life story of bombardier Lt. Louis Zamperini (former juvenile delinquent and Olympic athlete), who braved thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a foundering raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft and even worse as he battled to survive the crash of his plane into the Pacific in 1943.

The Central Library's Tea-Time Mystery Book Club will be reading And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, and will meet on Monday, October 15 at 3:30 p.m. in the Board Room of the Central Library. Coffee, tea and various English dainties will be served as the group discusses this classic tale of ten strangers lured to isolated Indian Island. A mysterious hostaccuses each one of murder and then proceeds to kill them off one by one by uniquely deadly methods.

Contact William Simpson
(First Monday) at the Fairmont Library 281-998-1095 x15 or Lucy Turoff (Tea-Time Mystery) 713-475-4984 for more information regarding these two book clubs. |
