Welcome to Pasadena Public Library
Greetings!
A new direction for Pasadena Public Library
With this newsletter column, I will be turning over the position of interim library director to our new full-time director, Tom Simiele, who joins us in April. I've had the pleasure of speaking to him both in person and by extensive email correspondence during our lengthy candidate assessment. I can say with confidence that Tom has the creative vision and the practical ability to lead the Pasadena Public Library in a whole new chapter of service. I'd like to tell you a little bit about him and why I feel so positive about his choice for this position.
For starters, Tom was the unanimous choice at all levels of the vetting process. We had an impressive candidate field to choose from, and when all was said and done, he was clearly the choice of the initial library screening committee, the Library Board and Mayor Isbell, who makes all final decisions regarding department leadership. You don't impress that many interested people unless you have something worth sharing, and Tom Simiele certainly does.
From a family replete with librarians, he followed a path in law for many years but eventually decided his heart was more drawn to the community library experience. He understands well a community must be served by the library if we expect it to be supported by the community.
His approach to technology in serving library patrons is pragmatic, stressing its use is an evolutionary process that must be embraced to keep up with library users' habits and needs. That same pragmatism is reflected in a very "bottom line" style of thinking that refuses to run down the same worn paths that wind up at the wrong destination. Considering himself to be more manager than traditional librarian, his goal is to make it as easy and cost-effective as possible to let great ideas rise from staff suggestions, and his own observations, into work-a-day reality on the floor.
During his interview visit, he took the opportunity to spend time in an informal-and witty--question and answer session with library staff and Library Board members, as well as Friends of the Library board members. From their reaction, it appears Tom will slip comfortably into a productive working relationship with them with relative ease. It's not that he doesn't have his own ideas about how to improve the library...he surely does. It's just that he has developed the ability to understand and acknowledge the needs of all participants and realizes we'll arrive at a positive conclusion sooner with everyone rowing in the same direction.
This may all sound a bit like uncritical praise, but having been through the entire hiring process from start to finish, I can honestly say that Tom Simiele was the best choice among many outstanding choices to lead our library in the years ahead. I look forward to working with him as he brings fresh ideas and infectious enthusiasm to his role as Director of the Pasadena Public Library.
I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank our wonderful library staff members and managers who, over the past many months, have made my job in this interim role one of the most enriching and enjoyable experiences I've had in my 12 years with the City of Pasadena. Thanks, too, to the Pasadena Library Board and Friends of the Library whose keen interest in supporting the library's mission was evident at all times, and to Mayor Johnny Isbell for the opportunity to share in this wonderful experience we call "the library" from the inside.

National Library Week
National Library Week is a week to celebrate and support library use. The event is held the second full week in April (April 8th-14th). The first National Library Week was first held in 1958, and sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA). Each year, ALA selects an honorary chair for the week. This year's honorary chair is Brad Meltzer. Meltzer is the host of History Channel's Decoded, and the author of The Book of Fate, The Tenth Justice, and The Inner Circle. The library is an opportunity for free access to computer, books, DVDs, CDs, and magazines. We also host a variety of programs throughout the year for the community. During National Library Week, patrons are encouraged to come into the library to show their support. For more information about National Library Week visit www.ala.org or www.atyourlibrary.org. Celebrate National Library Week!

Book Club Banter

"Let your bookcases and your shelves be your gardens and your pleasure-grounds. Pluck the fruit that grows therein, gather the roses, the spices and the myrrh."
--Judah Ibn Tibbon-
April is a time of blooming beauty that makes suffering the monsoon-like rains of March worthwhile. Easter brings new life and San Jacinto Day reminds us of all the real-life heroes who made us free to enjoy our beautiful country. Just come by the Library and check out our books and DVDs that cover everything from Easter crafts to our very colorful Texas and American history and catch our new mystery, paranormal, thriller and romance fiction too. Enjoy our "Easter Egg Treasures" exhibit and check out our Friends Bookstore's bargain coffee and chocolates as well. The price is right to make sure that our local Easter Bunnies have enough left over to keep those baskets full!
The Fairmont Branch Library's First Monday Book Club will be reading The Last King Of Texas by Rick Riordan, and will be meeting on Monday, April 2, at 6:00 p.m. in the Conference Room at the Fairmont Branch Library. Good company will be had as the group follows the "academic" adventures of P.I. (and PhD) Tres Navarre as he takes on an "emergency" opening at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where all he has to do is teach three classes, grade on a curve and walk in a dead man's very dangerous shoes.
The Central Library's Tea-Time Mystery Book Club will be reading Captiva by Randy Wayne White, and will be meeting on Monday, April 16, at 3:30 p.m. in the Board Room at the Central Library. Coffee, tea and assorted Easter treats will be served as we follow government agent turned marine biologist Doc Ford into a Florida "fishing dispute" that turns into outright deadly war.
Contact Bill Pierce
(First Monday) at the Central Library 713-475-4990 or Lucy Turoff (Tea-Time) 713-475-4984 for more information regarding these two book clubs.

Staff Spotlight
Name: April Watkins Title: Public Service Librarian I Responsibilities at the Library: I am responsible for assisting patrons with reference questions at the adult reference desk. I also help with some programming for adults. The biggest project I help with is ordering audio visual materials, such as DVDs, CDs, and audiobooks for the collection. What you don't know about me:
This month I will celebrate one year on the library staff, although I worked as an intern in the youth services department prior to becoming a full-time employee. I love to scrapbook, take photos, read, and write in my spare time. Favorite Genre: Young Adult Fiction Last Book Read: I just re-read The Hunger Games trilogy. AMAZING! Why I Love the Pasadena Public Library: I really love helping people answer reference questions. It is sort of like completing a puzzle to find the right answer. I also really love when I get to help with programming, because it allows me to be creative. |
