Teen Read Week™ is the national adolescent literacy initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), the fastest-growing division of the American Library Association.

Thousands of libraries, schools and bookstores across the country will hold similar events centered on this year's theme, Picture It! @ your library, which encourages teens to read a variety of materials, including graphic novels, books about photography and more.

Pasadena Public Library will celebrate Teen Read Week™ (October 16-22, 2011) with a "Silly Face Photo Contest" on Tuesday, October 18 at 4:00 p.m., followed by viewing and judging on Thursday 10/20 at 4:00 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to the top three contestants.

For more information, visit the Teen Read Week Display outside the Teen room or call Teen Central at 713-477-0726 x 4122.

"There's nothing to match curling up with a good book when there's a repair job to be done around the house."

--Joe Ryan--

October brings cooler days (we hope!) and a chance to catch our breath before the mad holiday rush begins. Take some of that time and check out our two book clubs, where you will enjoy discussing both interesting and entertaining works with intelligent fellow readers who can "appreciate the best and even make the best of the worst..."

The Fairmont Branch Library's First Monday Book Club will be reading True Grit by Charles Portis and will meet on Monday, October 3, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. in the Conference Room at the Fairmont Branch Library.

The Central Library's Tea-Time Mystery Book Club will be reading "B" Is For Burglar by Sue Grafton and will meet on Monday, October 17, 2011 at 3:30 p.m. in the Board Room at the Central Library.

Refreshments will be provided.

Please contact Bill Pierce (First Monday) at the Central Library 713-475-4990 or Lucy Turoff (Tea-Time) at the Central Library 713-475-4984 for more information regarding the book clubs.

Greetings!

Each year from September 15th through October 15th people in the United States celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month. This long-standing tradition began in 1968 and celebrates the history, culture and heritage of American citizens whose families came from Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean and South and Central America. This unique celebration spans two months and incorporates independence days of many countries found in those regions.

This month, Pasadena Public Library would like you to join us in celebrating this event on Saturday, October 15th from 2-4 p.m. for

Celebrando our Heritage. Enjoy an afternoon full of Mariachi music and special events featuring the arts, crafts and cultures of our Spanish speaking customers. It's an afternoon the entire family will enjoy.

Pasadena Public Library is committed to providing programs and services that meet the needs of all our customers. We recently reassigned some of our staff to focus primarily on bilingual and Spanish language programming for all ages through outreach and in-house programs. Although we have offered this type of programming in the past, it has been on a very limited basis. The library will be adding more computer classes in Spanish for adults, as well as family-oriented story times and special programs for children, teens and their families. In addition, we now offer bilingual and Spanish language outreach programs for children, teens and adults. For more information on these programs, please contact Belinda Calvillo (children's programs), Marivel Reyes (teen programs) or Norma Vergara (adult programs) at 713-477-0276.

In 1968, President Lyndon Johnson approved Hispanic Heritage week as a national recognition of Hispanic Americans. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan approved the public law to officially recognize a 30-day "month long" celebration to be celebrated September 15th-October 15th every year.

September 15th was chosen to begin Hispanic Heritage Month because five Latin countries (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua) celebrate their independence on that day. Also during this time, Mexico, Chile, and Belize celebrate their independence.

This year's theme for Hispanic Heritage Month is "Many backgrounds, many stories... One American Spirit'' according to the Library of Congress.

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, at the Central Library, there is a book display highlighting several Hispanic biographies, and informational books about the Hispanic cultural experience. Click here to see some of the available materials. Also, the newly formed Hispanic Outreach Committee will be hosting various events during the month of October in the library.

Furthermore, the Seniors' Outreach will host a program called Fiestas Patrias at five different seniors' healthcare facilities from September 26th-29th. The fiesta will feature chips and salsa, Mexican word games, and mariachi music. This program is only open to seniors living in the facilities where the event is being held.
