Book Club Banter

"I would be most content if my children grew up to be the kind of people who think decorating consists mostly of building enough bookshelves."
--Anna Quindlen--
September is known for vacation's end and school's beginning, but at the library, you still have the chance to have your own little "mini-vacation." (And this one is free!) Come check out one (or both) of our book discussion groups, where you'll enjoy the company of intelligent folks discussing interesting and entertaining books in cool comfort -- sometimes even with refreshments provided.
The Fairmont Branch Library's First Monday Book Club will read Lost Symbol by Dan Brown (a follow-up to his bestselling DaVinci Code) and will meet Monday, September 12, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. in the Conference Room at the Fairmont Branch Library.
The Central Library's Tea-Time Mystery Book Club will read Claws and Effect by Rita Mae Brown & Sneaky Pie Brown and will meet on Monday, September 19, 2011 at 3:30 p.m. in the Board Room at the Central Library. Tasty refreshments will be provided.
Contact Bill Pierce (First Monday) at the Central Library (713) 475-4990 or Lucy Turoff (Tea-Time) at the Central Library (713) 475-4984 for more information regarding the book clubs.

Library cards impact your life and save you money!
If you or a family member do not have a library card, September is the time to get one. Many people may think that a library card is just about checking out books, but books aren't the only thing we have to offer. In addition to an amazing selection of books for all ages, we also have popular DVDs, CDs, magazines, audio books, downloadable e-books, free Wi-Fi and Internet access, computer classes and study rooms. We offer a wide variety of programs for all ages throughout the year, and we partner with local area schools, daycares and senior care facilities to provide outreach services. Our well-trained staff is available to assist you with using computers, researching topics for homework or personal interest and assisting you in exploring career and job-hunting resources.
A library card provides you with opportunities that impact your life and save you money. Did you know that a Pasadena Public Library card is free? All you have to do is visit one of our two locations, fill out a short application and provide proof of identification and address. Children and teens under age 18 require a parent be present to sign the application. The only time you pay is if you lose or damage an item, or if you don't return borrowed materials on time. Faxing and scanning services, copying, printing and meeting rooms are provided at minimal cost to registered card holders and visiting customers. If you are interested in finding out how much your library card could save you each year, try the library value calculator developed by the Maine State Library (http://www.maine.gov/msl/services/calculator.htm). I found out I save up to $15,000 each year just by using my library card.
Here are just a few ways you can use your Pasadena Public Library card:

Green Scene Festival
Did you know that approximately 60% of household goods are recyclable? For the month of September, the Pasadena Public Library is celebrating the Go Green movement by becoming your neighborhood Green Scene. The library already has an ongoing recycling initiative in place that includes: recycling paper, cardboard, plastic, newspapers, magazines and discarded books; refurbishing furniture and shelving; emailing patrons notifications; using motion sensors for lighting in office areas; using a hybrid vehicle for outreach events; and using an energy efficient copier. And now we are asking you to get involved in the process. Throughout the entire month of September, there will be opportunities to win prizes by providing an email address where we can send notifications, like holds or overdue notices, instead of mailing paper notices. There will also be opportunities to learn at-home crafts that are made completely from recycled material. On September 24th from 1-4 p.m. Central Library will be hosting the Green Scene Festival complete with free hot dogs from James Coney Island, a scavenger hunt for teens and adults and Eco-friendly programs for all ages. In addition to the programs, the library will host a shredder truck for any documents that you may want to have shredded. All shredded papers will then be recycled. Want to create your own Green Scene? The library has several books about Going Green in the home, click here to see some of the available materials. In addition, the City of Pasadena offers a recycling program in several area neighborhoods that includes curbside pickup of glass, aluminum, tin, plastic, and paper materials. The city also has a facility to recycle unwanted hazardous liquids, such as oil. For more information, contact The City of Pasadena Recycling Center at 713-475-7884 or visit http://www.ci.pasadena.tx.us/default.aspx?name=sanitation. |
